The next week would be the most tense anyone in the Porter house had ever experienced before. On the rare occasions Vic was allowed to talk about what happened he made sure to let everyone know that he was uncomfortable walking on eggshells.
Zach stayed holed up in his room. Now that he was a co-boyfriend, he was more determined than ever to avoid Cameron and Abby. Hours passed, and then days, as the only hint of life inside those walls were the constant sound of a strumming guitar. It drove Kate insane, and she spoke often about how “Zach” had done the same thing when he was upset before the band had formed, only with a keyboard instead of a guitar.
Whenever she mentioned Cameron now, her smile was made up of tight lines. She’d always loved the boy as another son, but when it came to a mother’s love there was no question – she hated that they’d fought, but would die to protect who she thought was Zach. The real Zach, who was on the receiving end of the cold shoulder, could barely stand it. If there was a line drawn, he was being pushed closer and closer to crossing it every day.
Cameron felt uncomfortable. He’d gotten the green light from Zach to officially be considered Abby’s boyfriend, but it didn’t seem worth it in all the aftermath. Only he couldn’t think that when he was with her because every look and simple touch sent his heart pounding into overdrive. She was the only thing that was still relatively normal in the entire house. And that was why on the fifth official month he’d been in Zach’s body he wanted to do something special for her.
It was Wednesday, May the twelfth. Cameron styled Zach’s hair up out of his face and off to the left. He wanted to go somewhere nice, so he wore the nicest clothes of Zach’s he could find. A pair of black slacks with a thin black belt and a baby blue button down shirt that was the exact color of her eyes. He blushed, thinking how ridiculous it was to be dressing up to match her features, but he couldn’t help it. Everything had to be perfect.
Cameron threw a black blazer over his shoulder as he walked out into the living room to meet up with Abby. She wouldn’t let him get ready in the same room as her. He’d laughed as she explained that she wanted to be shocked by how good he looked and that wouldn’t happen if she watched him change, but he’d agreed nonetheless. So when he walked down the stairs he should have realized that he would also be shocked by Abby’s breathtaking beauty.
It was like a movie, when the girl is faced away from the boy, but when she turns around and smiles everything happens in slow motion. Abby was talking to Michael in the doorway, but when she heard Cameron’s steps she twirled around and the full force of her hit him like a wrecking ball.
Cameron noticed her eyes first; the color of his shirt, but so much deeper. Those eyes were constantly laughing and seemed to radiate confidence, trust, innocence, joy, and everything that was good about the world. She’d highlighted them with smokey eye makeup that would have stopped his heart if her presence wasn’t jolting it to life. Her lips were painted red that seduced and invited him all at once.
He felt underdressed. Compared to Abby’s outfit, there was nothing in the world that would make him think anything else. She wore a black dress that he would have considered plain, but there wasn’t a doubt in his mind that Abby could make anything look good. It stopped at the knee and pinched at the waist, but waved down in ruffles around her thighs. The straps had the effect of focusing the eye on her collar bone and chest area, though that section was modestly covered in a sweetheart neckline. It was dressy, but she made it casual and easy. Something that could be worn on an average day, but was usually reserved for special occasions; such as tonight.
