For the rest of that day everyone stayed in their respective rooms, only coming out when they needed to eat or use the restroom. No one in the house felt the need to speak apart from Kate, David, and Vic, who were blissfully ignorant.
Cameron knew he had a promise to keep to Zach, but he felt he deserved a day to recover and think about that awful date with Abby. He thought he had a reasonable excuse for her that would help him keep both his promise and his sanity. So the next morning when he came downstairs for breakfast and saw her toasting waffles he took a deep breath and tried to relax. “Good morning,” he said quietly.
Abby jumped and turned around. “God, you scared me,” she breathed out, her hand over her heart.
“I’m not God, but I will apologize. I thought you’d be at work?” As Cameron spoke he walked towards the refrigerator for the milk, and then casually leaned over her to reach a bowl in the cupboard. Next he picked out the cereal that only Zach could eat and moved all of his ingredients across the kitchen. Abby turned and watched him slowly prepare his meal.
“I switched shifts with someone in the afternoon today,” she replied coolly.
Finally finished, he turned around and faced her. “I was hoping we could talk. About yesterday.” He wanted to sound friendly and like they could start over, but he thought he heard the strain in his voice.
Now it was Abby’s turn to face the counter when the toaster popped up. “Pretty sure we said it all then.” She spread the butter lightly over the two perfect waffles, taking her time to fill in every little square.
“I thought of something else to say,” Cameron pressed. Abby poured on the syrup and moved to put everything away. “I can’t wait to hear this. What’s next, we stop looking at each other?” she said bitterly.
Cameron grunted a “no” and sat at the table. Abby saw him sitting there, sighed, and went to join him. “Alright. Do your worst.”
Cameron took a bite of his cereal and began slowly. “Yesterday, before it got weird, you told me about how you originally wanted to be like Cameron. To wait to have sex until you got married.”
Abby showed a hint of surprise, but it was gone quickly. “It’s a little late for that, don’t you think?”
Cameron smiled and said, “Yeah, I gathered that much. What I’m trying to ask is, well, what if we took up an oath like that? We agree not to have sex again until and if we get married.” He paused to let his idea sink in.
Abby thought about it for a long time, nearly finishing both of her waffles. Swallowing a large gulp of milk, she wiped her mouth with her hand and said, “What the hell?” Then she downed the last of her milk and went upstairs. Cameron smiled and finished his bowl of cereal cheerfully. Now that the worst part of his day was over he could go to rehearsal and tell Zach he was still being a dependable friend.
As he was washing out his bowl he saw Abby come down the stairs in running clothes and tennis shoes. “What are you doing?” he asked earnestly.
“I was going to go for a run since I don’t have to work for a while,” she replied while tucking headphones into her ears and grabbing a light jacket from a hook. She started for the door, but Cameron left his dish in the sink and cut her off.
