17 - party

"you look amazing.." i said, without thinking. i looked down, slightly embarrassed but when i looked back up she was smiling, blushing too.
"thank you!" she said, giggling. pull yourself together finn you're not like this. i told myself, no girl had ever got me nervous before. none of the girls in vancouver made my heart beat faster or my words come out wrong..
"who's ready then?" caleb said, his arm round sadie. i grabbed millie's hand and all of us walked out of the door. sadie and caleb, me and millie, and gaten and sophia. jack, wyatt and noah were no where to be found.
sophia told us that the beach wasn't too far away, about the same distance as the cliff we'd visited just hours before.
walking through the woods we saw plenty of other people making their way to the faint sound of bassy music. each couple walked together on the way, millie and i held hands as we walked, swinging them back and forth. it was nice to have the contact, like we were connected.
around ten minutes passed of us all walking, it was a calm journey, we didn't rush and it was nice to just be next to millie, even without talking.
we arrived at the edge of the beach and looked around, the mass of the party was pretty impressive, there was loud music coming from speakers all along the spread and everyone danced, laughed and drank.
i looked to millie and smiled, "ready?" i said, straining to make myself heard over the music. she nodded and grinned. i held onto her hand tightly and we broke out into a sprint on the sand, laughing. we spotted noah, jack and wyatt sat among a circle of other people from the camp. millie pointed to them and we made our way over.
sitting down we noticed three unopened bottles of bacardi, vodka and jack daniels in the middle of the circle. millie grinned and sprung for the bacardi, the other people were oblivious, already hammered. it was a big circle of different people, boys and girls. a few making out.
i watched millie as she swigged the clear liquid and handed the bottle to me, scrunching her eyes as she beared the taste. i laughed and took a swig myself. by the time we discarded the bottle it was half empty.
i watched, smiling as millie swayed and giggled. she shot a glanced back at me and noticed me staring. "lets dance." she said, standing up and just about keeping herself from falling over.
i bit my lip, a dance with millie would be a dream come true. sober or not.
i grinned and nodded, stumbling slightly as she pulled me off the ground towards a secluded space between high grass at the top of the beach. no one was around as we walked towards it, the music got quieter and we were far from everyone. just me and her.
she was still grinning and so was i. swaying slightly. when we reached a good place she stopped walking and turned around to face me, grabbing me by the neck gently, inches away from me. we breathed in time, heavily and deeply. her eyes were shining, wide and full of exhilaration.
i bit my lip to stop myself from grinning like an idiot. i grabbed her by the waist and pulled her a little closer.
she stopped smiling and bit her lip too, looking into my eyes. her laughing was gone and she was serious suddenly.
it wasn't a sad or an angry serious.
it was the kind of serious that says are you falling in love with me?
it looked like a realisation. but what was the answer?
yes.
