"It's pronounced BAGG-EL, you know like how it's spelled" I say for like the hundredth time.
"You are crazy" Nina insists shaking her head. "It's said how it's spelt" I argue
"I have never and I mean never heard someone pronounce bagel like that. It's pronounced ˈbeɪɡel" Nina says pointedly.
I sigh "Why the hell are you pronouncing it like that? It's shameful" I say pretending to be disgusted. Me and Nina always 'fought' like this all the time. We were both very passionate about what we thought was right but we never were actually mad at each other. It was just our thing I guess. I turn to Maya and Alissa, who've been watching our conversation the whole time from across the lunch table "What do you guys think?" I ask ready to prove I was right once and for all.
Alissa bit her bottom lip before replying "Well really I think it's a matter of opinion. I mean Bagg-el , bei-gel. Does it really matter?" She says trailing off her statement into a question as we stare at her. Alissa never liked getting in between confrontation and was a sort of peace maker sort of girl. Alissa nervously puts a lock of her blonde hair behind her ear.
"Alissa, you know I love you and all but" I whip around to look at Nina "it's BAGG-EL" She just rolls her eyes and shakes her head at me. Nina looks at Maya "What so you think?"
Maya slowly puts down her fork and folds her hands in front of her. "I think that" she pauses choosing her next words carefully. We all watch her intently waiting on her next words, and by we I mean Nina and I. Alissa looked defeated watching us argue over this seemingly stupid thing. I didn't blame her either, this was a daily occurrence.
"Both of you are stupid to be fighting over how to pronounce bagel" she says in a annoyed voice "when we should all be focusing on bigger and better things" her face breaks out into a a huge grin "like the fact that donuts are way better than any dumb bagel"
We all stare at her dumbstruck and then we all burst into a fit of laughter.
"The girls got a point" Nina says in between giggles. I agree through my laughter. People at nearby lunch tables stared at us a little but we just ignored us. There was no way they were going to bother 4 of the most well known and popular girls at the school.
Of course Nina Walters was a well part of the "Angels" cheerleading squad and known for her dads success as high ranking government official. Why she decided to live here in this small town with her grandmother was beyond me.
Alissa Bates was just an all around sweetheart, it was kind of hard for one to hate her. Not to mention she was on any and all dance committees all which were successful. Also a member of the student council.
Then Maya Webster. The loud, outspoken and quirky head of the yearbook committee. Also executive editor and photographer of the schools paper. Even though she was always behind the camera everyone knew her and she knew everybody. It was kinda hard to miss her.
Lastly there was me. Lilly Parks, resident 'new girl' at Eastdale High. Former nerd, geek and loner,- not that anyone here knew that. Sassy and classy, dating Eastdales biggest player and flirt- Julian Darveau. Not to mention I was also now on the cheer squad.
I hate to admit it but they've helped me climb the social ladder here at Eastdale. As bad and manipulative that sounds they are actually good friends. I don't know what I would do without them. Probably hang out with Monica but let's not think about that.
