As Christians, we all undeniably have a before Christ past. It's just how it is. We all at some point in time did not know Christ. During that time our lives would have been succumb with sins, war against God, and the things of the world. Before Christ, we lived daily in recreations, ideologies, and actions that, to a Christian, would bring shame.
Today each of us are probably all dealing with some form of before Christ shame. As humans it would be impossible for us to not feel shame on the daily. However, when we feel that shame, we don't need to sit in it. We need to be on our knees lifting our hands to heaven in surrender to God. Daily we need to surrender our shame to God. We can go from shame to freedom in just one moment. All it takes is saying, "God. Take this away from me. I give it to you. I surrender it all to you."
Here's where we mess up, we often think it's one and done. The preacher gives the alter call, we face plant on the alter, we cry out to God, he liberates us, and then we think "alright. I'm good. Won't have to deal with that again." And then we chop our own heads off because we don't meet Him at the alter daily and hand our past, present, and future over to Him, and we find ourselves right back in that state of shame.
The thing is, when God looks down at you, He sees you as white as snow. When He looks at you He sees His Son. It's not God who makes us feel shame because there is therefore no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Shame is one of the many attacks of the enemy, and to overcome it we have to realize that shame is from the enemy and God sees His Son not us.
It doesn't matter what's in your past. God doesn't see it. Just like the faithful Israelites, the blood of the Lamb is on your door frame and He passes right over you. Like the old hymn goes, "when I see the blood. When I see the blood. When I see the blood, I will pass, I will pass over you."
No matter what sin is in your past that you are so ashamed of, God can give you freedom. He can give you freedom from the shame of adultery and fornication. He can give you freedom from the shame of drug abuse and alcoholism. He can give you freedom from the shame of suicide, depression, and self mutilation. He can give you freedom from the shame of homosexuality and sodomy. He can give you freedom from the shame of any sin. All you have to do is meet Him at the alter daily, and surrender your shame to Him.
Heavenly Father, we surrender our shame to you right now in this moment. Have Your way in our hearts, Lord.
