I was sitting behind my desk, trying to focus on some piece of homework, but it was difficult to concentrate. I no longer felt it just in my stomach. My entire upper body was burning, almost as if I was wearing an invisible vest that had been lit on fire. And the pain was creeping downwards to my legs. My head felt like a spike had been driven through it. I was beginning to get dizzy. I tried to grab the pen to write an answer down, but my hand was too shaky.

"Come on, you must be a good girl. Just go through the pain for a while and soon you'll be thin again. You feel that burn? That's all the fat melting away. You'll be able to eat as much as you want after the weight is gone. You'll be grateful for all your hard work. Just hang on."

I looked back at my homework. Could it be my sanctuary one more time? "Just don't think about the pain. Focus on your work instead. Look, if 3x+4 is 25, what is x? Okay, that's 25 minus 4, then divided by 3. So 7. Okay, now write that in pencil, and at 7:30, after you eat your 300 calories for dinner and your hand isn't so shaky anymore, you'll go over it with a pen. There, you see. You can do it."
