The next day she woke up. It must be Sunday now, she thought as she got up to raise the curtains. Wait, that's right. I'm not at home anymore. She flopped herself back onto her bed, I'm part of some experiment now in which I'm the guinea pig.
Suddenly, a bell rang in her room. She heard the sound come from a speaker, which she had not noticed before.
"Good morning all," a woman's voice said through the speaker, "pardon the intrusion but please report to the cafeteria for breakfast."
Cafeteria huh? The girl thought. Where the hell is that?
"The cafeteria is to the right side of the older teenage group's rooms." The speaker said as if she read her mind.
"Wow." The girl said to herself sarcastically as she got up and went to the bathroom to freshen up. She then went outside, locked her room door behind her, and went to the cafeteria.
People were roaming around the room finding a seat or in line for food. She walked over to the line and grabbed herself a tray. She smelled freshly cooked eggs made in all ways, bacon, waffles, French toast, croissants and all sorts of food including oatmeal and cereal for quick people.
Overwhelmed by the sight of overflowing food, she bumped into someone. A tall boy with reddish brown hair and bright blue eyes turned to look at her.
"Sorry," the girl said avoiding eye contact, "I didn't see where I was going."
"It was my fault really," said the boy, "I didn't see the line moving. I'm really clumsy." He smiled. It was a very charming smile, the one that was very contagious. In fact he would have fit the part of Prince Charming in fairytales. The girl mentally smiled, and slowly a small smile crept on her face.
"What's your name?" the boy asked as he moved, allowing them to converse as the gathered food.
"I'm (y/n)" she said, "(y/n) (l/n)"she was handed a piece of omelet from one of the robotic servers. "What about you?" she asked him.
"Name's Ansel,"said the boy, "Ansel Hagenfort." He grabbed a cup of coffee and two sugar packets.
"Nice to meet you then Ansel," the girl said, grabbing a cup of warm water and a tea packet along with three packs of sugar. Ansel eyed and took note of it.
"That's a lot of sugar aye, little girl?" Ansel said smiling as he carried his tray and walked off.
"For the record," the girl said following him, "I'm not a little girl, I'm 18. I'm just shorter than others."
Ansel laughed, "Well, aren't you adorable when you're angry."
She nudged him with her elbow on the ribs, nearly causing him to let go of his tray. "Don't. Ever. Call me that."
"Alright," said Ansel, "but how about little girl?"
"Whatever," she sat down across from him on a table and began to eat.
They talked for a while, about their families who volunteered them to participate, school, and other things like the experiment.
"I think this whole thing is a joke," said the girl, "they just need us to live in this system and for how long exactly? It's stupid. You're basically messing with people's minds."
"I agree," Said Ansel, "but we have no choice really and with the experiment starting tonight as well."
"Yeah," said the girl, "all they are is a bunch of fcking morons who are all scared to even experience this themselves and they're the ones keeping us in the dark when we have no clue about what we have to do once we're there."
"The only thing we know right now is that the experiment takes place in 844 and that we're all sorted in age groups." Said Ansel taking a bite out of his food, "I heard rumors that they had picked out special people in each group as well."
"What the fck? Why?" She asked.
"I'm not sure, but all I heard was that they were part of the same experiment identical to ours. Same time. I heard they got in about 5 days ago. Maybe they're supposed to be some people that they want to observe more."
"Wow. Then maybe it wasn't at random." The girl said as she got up to throw the remains of her food away. Ansel followed behind her, doing the same thing.
"You think so?" Ansel asked they both head out of the cafeteria.
"Positive," (y/n) said, "maybe this was just some crap shoot thing the government decided to do to mess with others' minds."
"You have a point there," both of them decided to tour around the hallways. There was everything, a training hall, where Ansel taught her combat and self-defense moves for hours, a library, a computer room, and more.
The day eventually came to an end. Ever since she got here, all she thought was that she would be lonely, that no one would understand her, that everyone would all be fake-smiling when deep down inside they're scared enough to piss their pants. But when she met Ansel, she felt better, as if someone actually listened to her. He acted like an older brother she always wanted. They arrived at her room, laughing over a joke Ansel had heard from his best friend.
"Well, I'll see you tonight." The girl said, smiling as she opened the door to her room.
"See you," Ansel said smiling back as he tucked his hands in the pockets of his pants. She shut the door.
He's sweet, she thought, maybe this won't be so bad.
