'What the hell are you doing sneaking up on me?', I yelled angrily, more to facilitate the anxiety I was feeling, rather than directing anger towards him.
'Sorry, didn't mean to. Just wanted to speak to you', he spoke calmly and softly and his eyes sparked with eager anticipation.
'What about?', I asked, before something clicked in my mind and I wondered how he knew where I would be. 'Have you been following me?', I tried to stay calm, but my anxiety was again rising.
'I needed to speak to you', he said avoiding my question, 'I need to explain.... about Abbey'
'What?', he was confusing me, 'Who the hell is Abby?', as I asked the question I remembered.
'Abbey....the girl you broke up with me over', he said dumbfounded.
'Well I don't want to talk about her', I said turning my back to him.
'Please', he said grabbing my arm.
I turned to him in spitting fury, 'if you don't let go of my arm, I'm going to scream'
I could see his anger rising when he roared, 'no, you're going to let me explain'
'Like hell I am', I said trying to break my arm free, but he held on tighter, my arm was starting to hurt. He used his other arm to push me against a hedge someone had erected in front of their house, for privacy. The hedge was solid and although some if it rounded me, it didn't hurt.
I reacted strongly, trying to raise my other hand to punch him, only to find he had that pinned down too.
He was stronger than I remembered and I couldn't move.
My mind was saying "kick him" and my heart was saying "just let him talk and he'll leave"
But what came out, as his face got closer to mine, was, 'I hate you, why don't you just leave me alone'
He looked shocked by my response and I could feel his grip loosening, then he was torn away from me and thrown to the floor. I cleared my vision to see Dwayne hovering over Aiden, who was on the floor with Dwayne's larger companion on top of him, pinning him to the ground.
'Hold him there Roger', for some reason the only thing that came to my mind, was the bulkier guy's name was Roger, Jack had told me his name at Janet's birthday party.
'You okay?', Dwayne said turning to me, his neck muscles tensed and his fists clenched.
'It's Aiden, Dwayne', Roger said looking into Aiden's face.
'Did he hurt you?', Dwayne asked. This time I shook myself out of my daze and looked first at Dwayne and then at Aiden, who was looking at me, his eyes pleading with me.
'No, he didn't. You can let him.....thanks....let him go', I was clearly more shaken up than I thought.
'You want us to let him go?', Dwayne asked clearly taken aback.
'Yes, please', I was starting to calm. I was still in shock as to what had happened.
Dwayne turned to Roger nodding to him, Roger got off Aiden, who lay there for a moment.
'You were lucky, I was ready to mash you up boy', Roger growled down at Aiden, but his words lacked conviction.
'Get lost Aiden and leave Catherine alone. I ever hear you looked at her funny, you're in trouble. You hear me?'
Aiden nodded, but there was revenge in his eyes. His eyes immediately changed when he looked at me, there was a sadness in them, which yearned for me to forgive him, but I stood firm.
'Don't ever speak to me again'
He nodded, got up and walked off, keeping his head high. I presumed it was more for Dwayne and Roger's benefit, rather than mine.
