It had been a month since we graduated, and in a month and a half, we would start our next adventure: college. I remembered it was so hot this summer, and I decided I needed a change since I would start school soon.
Davina, Hope, and I went shopping and made a stop in one particular place. I left for about forty-five minutes before I returned. Their jaws dropped. I bet you're wondering what I did? Well, I went into a salon, looking one way, and came out looking different.
"So, what do you think?" I asked girls, running my hand through my shorter hair.
"It's different," Davina said.
"I like it. The haircut makes you look hot," Hope said.
"Do you think Drew will like it?" I asked.
They looked at each other, then back at me.
"Nope, Drew will hate it," Davina said.
My face dropped. Hope said, "Maybe not. You never know how Drew will react. How about we get our haircut, and that way, you won't be alone?"
Davina looked Hope questionably.
"Oh, come on. It's time to go for a more sophisticated look since we're college-bound," Hope said to Davina. Davina gave me a look. Hope dragged Davina into the salon. They finally emerged, and both had a different style. I had a wedge bob, Hope had a pixie cut, and Davina had it long in front and short and spiky in the back. Yep, our guys would kill us for cutting our long hair. Eh, it's hair. It'll grow back.
We came into the living room carrying bags when Drew glanced at us, then did a double-take, and got to his feet.
"Liz? What the hell did you do to your hair?" Drew exclaimed.
"Do you like it?" I asked Drew.
Drew looked at me, speechless.
"It can't be that bad," Elijah said as he looked at me but looked past me at Davina. "What the fuck, Davina?" Elijah yelled.
"Aren't you two idiots making a big deal out of hair? It's hair," Junior said.
"Oh, yeah? Look at what your girl did, genius," Drew said to Junior.
Junior turned and saw Hope. He got to his feet. "Hope? What did you do?" Junior questioned with exasperation.
"Don't you like it, babe?" Hope smiled.
"Fuck, no, I don't like it!" Junior yelled.
Hope's smile disappeared. "It doesn't matter since it's my hair and not yours."
We stood there and crossed our arms. The guys stood there with their hands on their hips as we had a stare-off. More like a glare off, but you get the point.
"Dad, see this," Matt said, popping his head into our parent's bedroom. Dad followed Matt out of the bedroom, and they made their way halfway down the stairs.
"Well, this is a new development," Dad said. "Go get your mother. We will need a woman's touch with this one." Matt nodded, and a few minutes returned with Mom.
"Ryan, what happening?" Mom asked Dad.
"Look," Dad said, nodding towards the six of us.
Mom saw our new hairstyles and the glares we were shooting each other. "Ah, this situation reminds me of the beard incident."
"Yeah, don't remind me. I miss that beard," Dad said, rubbing his face.
"Quit pouting. You look hotter like this," Mom said to Dad.
"Eh, who needs a beard, anyway?" Dad added.
"Watch and learn, boys," Mom said, making her way down to the six of us.
"What is Mom doing?" Matt asked.
"You'll see," Dad smirked.
Mom walked in between the six of us. She looked at us girls, "Cute. Don't you think, boys?" She gave the guys a look. The guys grumbled.
"What? I didn't quite get that," Mom said, giving them a look.
"We said yeah," Junior said, clenching his fists.
Us girls stuck our tongue out at the guys, pissing them off even more as Mom turned to us, "Tsk, tsk, tsk, that wasn't nice."
We grumbled.
"What? I didn't quite get that," Mom said to us.
"We said sorry," I said to Mom.
"That's what I thought. Look," Mom said, scratching her forehead, "the six of you won't always like what the other does, but you have to compromise. It's part of being a couple. Yes, the girls cut their hair, but it will grow back."
"Thank you," we said in unison.
Then Mom turned to us, "But you also have to consider the fact they may not like how you cut your hair or what style you choose."
"Thank you," the guys said.
"But! And this is big, but you will live with each other's decisions and respect them. It's called acting like an adult."
"What about when Dad had a beard?" I asked Mom. "You didn't like it."
"That's true, but I also accepted that it was his body. I respected his decision if he kept it or not after we fought about it, and I chased him with a pair of clippers," Mom mentioned.
"You didn't," I said, surprised.
"Oh, I did, and because Dad shaved the beard, he made your two idiot uncles shave, too," Mom told me.
"Yeah, Dad is still butt hurt about it," said Junior.
"Only because Frazier tried to wear a fumanchu until your mother took matters into her hands," Mom explained.
"Yeah, I heard," Junior said.
"Look, I get it. You guys aren't happy about the girls cutting their hair, but you can accept it, or you will spend a lot of lonely nights at college," Mom reasoned.
We all sighed and Drew walked over to me. Drew touched my hair. "Okay, I will admit, it looks fucking hot."
"Hey!" Dad yelled. Drew gave Dad a look, as did Mom and Dad shut up.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yes, really, but next time, can we at least pick out a hairstyle together?" Drew suggested.
"I can do that," I smiled, and he pulled me into a kiss.
Elijah walked over to Davina. "Well, look on the bright side. It will make doing pranks so much easier, without all that hair getting in the way."
"Yeah, plus, I'm getting used to this style and less time in the shower washing up," Davina grinned.
"And more time for other stuff," Elijah said, wrapping his arms around Davina. Dad and Mom rolled their eyes.
Junior walked over to Hope. "Still not sure about it, but I respect your decision."
"Thank you," Hope said.
"Now, it means I get to shave my head," Junior smirked.
"You're kidding, right?" Hope asked with a questionable look.
"Nope, I'm going short, baby," Junior grinned.
"Fine," Hope sighed, and Junior took her hand. He walked over to the stairs.
"Where's the clippers, Uncle Ryan?" Junior asked.
"Come on; I'll help you, you fool. But don't tell your dad," Dad said as they followed him upstairs.
Mom walked over to Matt. "Did you learn anything?"
"Yeah, keep my mouth shut," Matt answered.
"Smart boy, like your father," Mom said, patting his back.
Yep, the hair episode before college start was the start of many things to come. I had a feeling many new changes were on the horizon for us, and this was the beginning.
