The sun's bright rays shine through the window Sunday morning. Katelyn didn't leave last night until around 10:00, right after her dad called her screaming through the phone for her to get home. When she hung up she told me she didn't know why he wanted her home so badly when all he'd do is ignore her when she got home anyway. Katelyn and I told each other deeper things about our past, things like Liam and how he and my last foster brother nearly killed my best friend. Things like how Katelyn was bullied in her last school and when her father found out he didn't care.

I'm glad Katelyn opened up to me and I wasn't surprised when she started to cry. Memories as painful as hers are hard to think of without bursting into tears. I would know.

I skip down the stairs and into the kitchen, in a very good mood but I don't have a clue why. Especially considering last night was filled with tears and bad memories. Everyone sits around the kitchen table, the only empty seat is located right next to Brandon, as always. I sit down and he passes me a bowl, spoon, and the cereal box along with the milk. Everyone eats silently, barely a word was spoken.

At about 9:30, we all finish breakfast and Lena starts scrubbing the dirty dishes in the sink while Steph washes down the table and the rest of us head upstairs to finish the homework we wait till Sunday to do.  After completing math, English, Spanish, and history homework, I lay back on my bed and stare at the ceiling. A few minutes later, Mariana and I hear a knock at the door and we both turn our attention to the person at the doorway. Brandon.

"Get your shoes on, Cals," he says to me with a smile. When I continue sitting there with confusion written on my face, he explains that he has something important to tell me. Mariana gives him a slightly sad smile and he returns it.

So I slip on my combat boots and shove my phone in my back pocket. His moms gave him permission to use the car, but he turned the offer down. When I asked why, he explained that taking the car wouldn't take as long as walking and he wanted to spend as much time with me as he possibly could.

He held my hand the whole walk. We were only about half way there when I knew that we were going to Our Place. He helps me up on the rock and for a moment we simply just watch and listen as the waves wash along the beach and the seagulls talk to each other in the air.

"So what'd you have to tell me?" I ask after a while.

"Well... You know how Moms took me to the doctors last night?" I do know. At around 6:00 yesterday Lena told me and Mariana that they were taking him. I nod and he continues, "Well, I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry, but lately I've been feeling.... Sick. Really sick. Anyway, I ended up telling my moms a few days ago and they made me an appointment with my doctor. I just found out last night..... We didn't tell you 'cause you had Katelyn over."

"You didn't tell me what?"

He sighs before he slowly and sadly says, "Callie, baby, I have cancer."
