After only fifteen minutes in Home Depot, Rachel completely gave up getting anything done with both Maria and Michael there. They started yelling so loud that everyone had stopped to stare at them. Rachel had to drag them both out of there, then yelled at them in the parking lot, telling them that she’d handle the rest of it herself and wanted no further input from either of them.

They had both remained silent on the drive over to the Crashdown, where Rachel had decided they would go for lunch without even opening the topic for discussion, knowing that Maria and Michael would somehow end up fighting about it.

She pulled into a parking space out in front of the café before unbuckling her seatbelt and stepping out of the car. Maria and Michael filed out behind her and fell into step as they made their way to the door. Just as they were reaching it, the door opened from the other side, and Tess stepped out.

“Oh, hey guys.” She smiled at them. “How did it go?”

“Don’t ask.” Rachel grumbled, shooting a look over her shoulder at Michael and Maria. “What are you doing here?” She turned her attention back to Tess.

“Oh, I just stopped in to have a soda with Finn.” She replied, as if it were nothing. She clearly knew nothing about the history of Finn and Rachel. “He invited me to your birthday party tonight, Maria, I hope that’s alright with everyone.”

“Yeah, that’s fine.” Maria replied, glancing briefly at Rachel to check her reaction to the news.

Rachel's facial expression remained neutral, not letting on that she was secretly daydreaming about knocking Tess’ teeth down her throat just at the thought of her have any plans whatsoever with Finn. “So we’ll see you tonight, then?” Rachel asked, moving around Tess to go inside.

“Yeah.” Tess answered back. “I’m just heading to the mall to hopefully find a nice outfit to wear tonight. Wouldn’t wanna make Finn look bad.” She giggled.

Rachel faked a laugh in reply before mumbling a goodbye and walking inside. She noticed Finn at the counter, but simply tossed her purse into the booth that they used to always sit in back in high school, and walking into the back to say hi to her dad, who was working the grill. “Hey, Daddy.” Rachel greeted, rising up on her tip-toes to place a kiss on his cheek, and then flick a piece of hair out of his eyes. “You need a haircut.”

“You sound like your mother.” Jeff Berry grumbled, flipping the burgers on the grill before lowering the fries into the hot grease. He glanced over at Rachel. “You look very nice today.”

“Thanks.” Rachel replied, doing a little twirl for him. “Just a little something I threw together.” She fibbed slightly. “Mom upstairs?”

“Yeah, she’s supposed to be down in a few minutes. Agnes called in sick. Again.” Jeff muttered something else under his breath, but Rachel didn’t catch it.

“Ok, well, I’m gonna go get something to drink and sit down. I’m having lunch with Michael and Maria.” She started to back away. “And probably Finn, since he’s already here. I’m sure Michael’s gonna invite him to eat with us.”

Jeff nearly dropped the spatula as he turned to look through the order window. “Hudson.” He growled, his eyes landing on Finn, who had, indeed, moved from the counter to sit down with Michael and Maria. “You stay away from that boy. He’s nothing if not bad news. Thinking he’s a big hot shot basketball player, I’ll show him a thing or two if he tries anything.” Jeff started ranting, flinging his arms around in front of his face.
