Dixie's POV:
I stand up and walk over to stand in front of Alice before I take off my shades. I stare into her golden eyes, waiting for them to haze over before I start. A human takes one to two seconds to glaze over. A vampire can take anywhere from two to ten seconds. Finally, I see her eyes glaze over, and I think about what I want her to do. I suppose my normal routine is fine, but I better shorten it and maybe add to it some.
"I think you're tired Alice. Don't you agree you're tired? You want to take a three minute nap, don't you? You'll blank your mind and close your eyes, and sleep for three minutes. Doesn't that sound great? When you wake up you'll shout "Happy Birthday" because it's someone's birthday somewhere. Doesn't that sound nice? Now close your eyes, blank you mind, and sleep." (D)
I watch as she fights it for a few more seconds but then her eyes close. I smile some as I return to my seat and I see Jasper look at me and then Alice with concern. Edward looks between me and Alice before leaning back in his chair stunned.
"Her mind is actually blank, there's nothing there at all." (Ed)
"How....what?" (Bella)
"It's my gift, getting people to do what I want them to I suppose, but I have to suggest it to them first and make eye contact." (D)
I had set my timer out of habit and when it went off three minutes later I watched with everyone else as she opened her eyes and shouted 'Happy Birthday' before looking just as confused as everyone else was amused.
"That was excellent!" (Em)
The next hour was spent persuading each of them to do something weird or unusual. The only one I was unable to persuade was Bella, but since she's a shield I didn't let it bother me very much. I soon found myself sitting on the couch laughing with Jasper and Alice, as Rose and Emmett danced around the room singing the 'hills are alive with the sound of music.' This was honestly the most fun I have had in decades, but just as soon as it comes I feel it begin to leave.
I laughed a few seconds more before the thirst hit me and I knew that I had overdone it on persuasion for the day as the burn increased. I felt agitated but was soon calm again, and with a smile at Jasper I knew it was thanks to him. I see Edward staring at me with concern just as Rose and Emmett finish their dancing and singing duet.
"The more you use the gift the more you have to feed?" (Ed)
"Yeah, my eyes will probably be purple or even red again before tonight." (D)
"Hmm odd, that's not the case for any of us." (Ed)
"That's very interesting indeed. Will you be hunting again tonight then?" (C)
"Yes, I'll probably go into Seattle though. If I have y'alls permission. I can make do with animals, it just takes more than one or two humans does." (D)
I watch as the room becomes silent for a moment before Carlisle stands and seems to think about my request. I see him look to Esme for a moment and then back at me before he smiles a bit. I see Edward tense for a moment and then nod in a reluctant sort of way before looking back to me.
"If Renesmee and Jacob wouldn't mind accompanying you tonight, then I believe we would have no problem with it." (Ed)
"I don't want to be a bother." (D)
"I think it's great! Plus I'm the only one that you won't have to worry about stealing your food, and it'll help put Jakey's mind at ease about you." (Nessie)
I looked toward the smiling girl slowly smiling in return and nodding my head in agreement. I see Edward look at Jacob in a meaningful way and Jake nods with a look towards Nessie. I thought they were close, but now I know he loves her by the way he looks at her, I just don't know what type of love it is. I feel a pang of envy and loneliness pass through me before I shove it away, focusing instead on the burn in my throat.
"Dixie, why did you choose Forks to hide out in?" (B)
"I don't really know. It's just like I've felt a pull here for a few years, decades even. I'm not even sure where I heard the name of this town to begin with. Come to find out I move here and there are more supernatural beings here than I've met in any single decade." (D)
"May I ask why you still rob banks? Surely you know that you can learn a trade or skill and work, making money just as easily." (Esme)
"I guess because it was the family business. I haven't had a lot of time around humans, other than robbing banks, shopping, or the occasional hunting interaction. Guess you could say I don't fully trust myself to practice a trade or get a job among them yet. I don't always keep all the money, it's given to those in need when I see them and every human I persuade on hunting trips gets money left in their pocket as well." (D)
I see Carlisle nod a bit slower than I would like, but I see Esme smile a soft smile at me no doubt remembering the girl last night. I can only hope my persuasion worked right on her and she's looking for a house or apartment somewhere safe. I hear Jake's stomach growl first followed by both mine and Nessie's next. Everyone laughs a bit as Esme shakes her head and stands up, leaving the room with a smile on her face.
"Well food time for the humans.....well mostly human I guess." (Em)
"Let's go you guys." (Esme)
I smile some as I follow behind Jake, Nessie, and Esme, leaving the rest of the group behind in the front room. We walk into a giant kitchen with a huge set of window doors leading to a porch balcony, facing the woods. I can even see a small river running behind it. I smile as I see the view, before I walk back to the table and sit down.
"Shit.....I forgot how creepy they were." (Jake)
I had looked up to see Nessie hitting Jake on the back of the head, and right before I went to ask what he was talking about I saw my reflection in the stainless steel fridge. I had thought my eyes would turn purple, but I was wrong, they turned bright red. I started to leave and go get my shades but before I could Nessie grabbed my hand.
Immediately I saw myself through her eyes, and I looked beautiful even with red eyes. I smiled at her as she let go of my hand, with her smile mirroring my own but I still left the room to get my shades. I walked back into the front room to see Emmett and Jasper playing a video game, Carlisle and Edward reading books, and the girls all talking about taking a trip up to Alaska in a few weeks. Once I entered the room though they all looked at me a bit surprised.
"You seriously weren't kidding then about the persuasion thing taking a toll on you." (Em)
"I'm afraid not. Sorry I just came to get my shades." (D)
"Don't feel the need to wear them here Dixie. We can all be ourselves here." (C)
"Yes sir, but just in case." (D)
I see him nod at me a bit before walking back out into the room and into the kitchen. I see three large pizzas coming out of the oven just as I walk back in and I wonder how Esme did it. I thank her as she sets them down on the table, watching as Jacob already burns his hand reaching for a slice that's too hot at the moment. Nessie laughs at him, but I bite my tongue and smile instead, rather not give him more reason to dislike me other than my diet.
