The next day after school I went to Dakota's to do my homework instead. I'd already told my mom and Josh at dinner the night before so they wouldn't try calling Jacob's house or something if I didn't come home on time.
Dakota let me rant while we did our homework. I brought him up to speed on Josh knowing everything and the way Ryan and Josh had both been paying so much extra attention to me. Even though I expected it, he didn't ask if I'd been hurting myself, so I left that part out. After I made the single cut that I started with, I made three more before cleaning up and stashing everything so Josh wouldn't find out for a few days.
"I really hate how Jacob's been treating you the this week," Dakota said as we finished the math worksheet. "It's not just that he's been ditching you for Emily, but he's barely said a word to me and Julia since our sleep over. He's not being fair to any of us."
I shrugged. "He's in a relationship for once. Maybe it'll settle down after a little while."
"I hope so," he said quietly before we continued working in silence.
I checked my phone and had a text from Emily. "OHMYGOD! Why didn't you tell me Jacob can sing and play guitar? He's so good. He wrote me a song!"
I groaned and handed my phone to Kota. "I can't believe he already played it for her! They've been together for like 3 days."
Kota shook his head. "He's chasing after her like a lost puppy. I don't know what to say. I wonder what the song was."
"I heard part of it on guitar," I admitted. "He wouldn't sing any of the words while I was there."
"I kinda want to hear," Dakota admitted. "I've never heard him sing in person."
I smiled at that. Up until Emily, I was the only person from school who had ever heard Jacob sing other than along with the radio. "Maybe we can get him to sing it for all of us."
I took my phone back and replied something to Emily about Jacob being awesome and it was supposed to be a surprise. Dakota nodded. "I think I'd be satisfied if he just sang anything in front of Julia and I."
"We'll have to make him do it. If he can't sing for us, how is he supposed to sing for crowds of actual people?"
We hung out for awhile and I went home a little earlier than I usually did, but I felt better after being with Kota than I did with Jacob. I walked in with half of a real smile on my face. Mom was in the kitchen making dinner and I went out to join her like I used to when I got home.
"Hi Sweetie," she said and leaned over to kiss the top of my head as I picked up the knife off the cutting board and started chopping all the veggies. "How was your day?" she asked.
"It was good," I told her. "I had a good time over at Kota's. It's nice to get away from Jacob a little. We spend so much time together."
"Oh!" she exclaimed. "Did your father tell you that Jacob and Ryan's families are both coming over on Sunday?"
I nodded. "Yeah. We're all excited. Jacob and I are going to pick a movie everyone will like. Even Sierra and Josh."
Picking movies was the toughest part about getting the full families together. Sierra was so much younger, so she always wanted little kid movies and we couldn't pick anything too grown up and Josh's favorite movies were horror movies we couldn't possibly show to Sierra. Josh could settle for comedies, but it's hard to find things he thinks are funny that are still appropriate for a fifth grader.
My mom laughed. "Good luck with that. Remember to watch out for Sierra."
"Do you really think Jacob would let her watch something inappropriate? He's like seventy times more protective of her than Josh is of me."
