Josh stood there for a minute and watched me cry before coming to his senses. "Ryan!" he called. "Bring the paper towels up here! Hurry!"
He pulled the rug back from my blood and knelt down in front of me, putting a hand on my shoulder.. "It's okay," he hushed me. "It's okay."
He pulled out more tissues and pressed them to my arm. Ryan came to a dead stop at the doorway and stared for a moment before kneeling beside Josh and starting to wipe the floor. Josh tried just wiping down my wrist, but the blood was running and dripping and drying all the way down my arm. Ryan wet a paper towel and took me out of Josh's hands. "Sit up here on the bathtub, Cass. It's going to be okay."
He started mopping the blood off my arm and was extra careful of the open wounds. "Josh go get her a change of clothes. We have to get these in the wash now if we don't want it to stain. I know how to get it out. Where's the first aid kit?"
I pointed to the closet in the corner and Josh rushed out to find me clothes. Ryan stood up and dug around for the first aid kit. "How do you feel? Are you light headed?"
I shook my head as I tried to calm down my crying. "I'm still okay."
He pulled out a long piece of gauze and laid it over the length of my arm before taping it down. "Bring her long sleeves," Ryan called out. "We don't want your mom to notice."
Josh came in as the last piece of tape was laid down to secure my bandage. "We'll be right outside. Just get changed, okay?"
I nodded and they walked out, but not before Josh picked my razor off the floor and took it with him. Tears were still running down my face as I tore off my blood stained shirt and jeans and replaced them with a pair of leggings and Chad's sweatshirt that I was insanely thankful I took off right before Jacob left. I opened the door and let the boys back in. "I'm going to clean up in here," Josh said. "Cass, can you take Ryan down to the laundry room and help him with your clothes?"
Ryan took my clothes from my hands and led me down the stairs without a word. "Where is your stain stuff?" he asked.
I pulled the stain remover off the shelf for him and winced as I moved my arm. He shot me a weak smile as he ran my clothes under the water and started scrubbing them against themselves. By some miracle, the stains were lifted. He grinned at them in pride and picked up a stack of my dirty laundry before throwing it all in the washer. Once the door was closed and the machine was running, Ryan turned towards me.
My cries and sobs were finally starting to settle. He ran the back of his hand across my cheek and wiped away some of the tears. "Come on. We'll go upstairs and wait for Josh. We still have an hour til your mom should be back."
As we climbed to the top of the stairs I was stunned to see my mom taking off her jacket by the front door. "Cassie! Baby, what's the matter?"
I didn't even know where to begin. She opened her arms to me and I fell into them. "What happened?" she asked again in my ear.
I gasped for air as I started crying a little harder. "Evan broke up with me!"
That was easily the safest route to go about all of this. She hugged my head into her chest and stroked my hair. "It's okay, honey. Why did he do that?"
I started sobbing and I couldn't remember the last time I'd cried this hard in front of her. "I," I hiccuped. "I don't know!"
She held me for a bit and pulled back to see my face. "I'm so sorry, honey. What do you want to do? Do you want ice cream? What do you want for dinner?"
I shakily asked her if she could make my favorite, barbeque pork chops and homemade mashed potatoes, and she smiled. "Of course I can. I'll go to the store right now. Where's your brother?"
