     ban·shee
ˈbanSHē/
noun
noun: banshee; plural noun: banshees
(in Irish legend) a female spirit whose wailing warns of an impending death in a house.

The Irish legend of the banshee is very different from the American legend.
The Irish legend claims that a banshee is a wailing woman heard throughout the night coming as a warning to the family that someone will be passing on. The banshee is thought to be crying because they are grieving the death that is near and warning the family what is to come.
The American legend claims that a banshee is an evil monster like creature.  One that seeks death and screams when she has found her victim.  The banshees scream would be so loud that it breaks glass and the arteries of her victims causing them to drown in their own blood.
