"So, about Lucius?" Sirius asks while watching Harry play with his new toy wand.
"About Lucius." Remus sighs placing tea on the table in the sitting room. "What are your thoughts?"
"I don't know. I want to believe her, I really do. But even in school Lucius had the mentality that anything other than pureblood was inferior to him." Sirius said as he leaned against Remus' knees.
"Maybe we should just ask Dumbledore, Padfoot?" Remus suggested.
"I suppose we could. Do we know when we're supposed to go to the school again?" Sirius asks casually as though none of this is bothering him. "OR! We could ask Augusta when she comes tomorrow! She knows just about every bit of gossip and somehow knows what's true and what's not. I like that idea significantly more."
"Alright, I still say we should ask at some point. Narcissa and Draco are your family, love." Remus says.
"Moony!" Harry says suddenly throwing his hands up.
"Yes, Prongslet?" Remus says laying on his stomach to play with Harry on the floor.
"Play!" The little boys giggles and runs over throwing himself on Remus' back. Remus flips little Harry over and starts tickling him and swinging him around laughing just as much as Harry.
Sirius pours himself some more tea and leans against the door frame, making sure to commit every detail of that moment to memory. He's then reminded of how much he truly and completely loves the two people in front of him.
After a few hours of playing with Harry's new toys, Sirius and Harry having fun figuring out the new Muggle toys. Remus walks back into the sitting room after reading in the library to find the two asleep on the floor curled up with Harry on Sirius' chest. It was Remus' turn to fully realize what his new little family meant to him and how much he loves them. The sight of the little boy he loved more than anything curled up on top of the man that he loves was something he would truly cherish for the rest of his life. Even as the full moon was coming up within the next week he felt like everything really was going to be okay.
As the three sat down for dinner that evening talking about everything they could think of, the two men felt at peace.
"Moony, the full moon is coming up." Sirius says rather somberly.
"Yes, Padfoot, it is. I realized that earlier. I will just have to face this one on my own." Remus had already accepted that he would have to change on his own for the next few months.
"No! We can have someone watch Harry for us! It's just one night, we can take him to Hogwarts. I'm sure Minnie would just love to have him! He's such a sweet kid." Sirius exclaimed as though that was already decided.
"I don't know, Padfoot, we only just got him. He's been through so many changes." Remus says looking down at his plate.
"Well, let's ask Mcgonagall then ask the little Prongslet himself!" Harry smiles up from his dinner at the mention of his name and looks at his godfathers. In that moment, they somehow knew it was going to workout.
The next morning Remus woke up before both Sirius and Harry. So he climb out of bed untangling himself from Sirius' grip around him. As he was making breakfast and tea he decided to write to his old professor and ask her thoughts on taking care of their young charge for one night. He also wanted to talk to her about what they had heard from Narcissa at the bookshop.
Just as he was sealing the letter and attaching it to their owl Sirius comes down the stairs with a yawn and a sleepy looking Harry in his arms.
"Morning, sleepy heads!" He says to the two kissing Harry on his head and Sirius on his lips. Harry reached out for Remus to carry him over to the table to have breakfast while Sirius poured himself some tea.
"I wrote to Mcgonagall this morning. Asked her if she would mind having our Prongslet for the night of the full moon." Remus says looking up from helping Harry eat.
"Mm. That's good. What'd she say?" Sirius asked, still not fully awake.
"Nothing yet, love. I only just sent it out." Remus chuckled at how utterly adorable Sirius was in the mornings.
"Augusta is bringing Neville over today, yeah?" Sirius asked resting his head in his hands.
"Yes! So we can ask her about Lucius and Harry can interact with someone his age. It'll be good." Remus says walking over and kissing him on the head on his way to get ready for the day.
"Okay Prongslet, bath time!" Sirius says as he grabs up his giggling godson up and spins him to the bathroom.
Sirius finally got the little boy clean and dried and was coming out of the bathroom with him in a towel when Remus comes in to remind him of the time. Now was the hard part: getting the fourteen month old dressed. Harry didn't mind being in clothes, but the act of getting dressed was a completely different story. He would wiggle and try to play peek-a-boo with whatever was going over his head at the time.
"Moony! Your turn! I did my part by bathing the sweet angel. You get to dress the little devil." Sirius called in a sing song voice trying to sound innocent.
"Of course. Thank you so much, Padfoot." Remus replied sarcastically.
Once he was dressed they laid him down for a short nap to get themselves ready for when Augusta arrives. The two of them getting ready took even longer than getting Harry ready, but for a totally different reason. After their showers they kept getting distracted by one another so they'd have to start getting dressed or pause what they were doing until that evening. By the time they finished getting ready, including Sirius' hair time they had about ten minutes before their two guests arrived.
Right on time their floo opened and out stepped a proud looking Augusta and a timid looking young Neville.
"Augusta! So nice to see you. How have you been?" Sirius asked.
"Sirius, a pleasure as always. I've been good, Neville and I have been taking good care of one another, haven't we?" The woman replied setting the boy down next to Harry who instantly offered Neville some of his blocks.
"Would you like tea?" Remus asked walking in with a tea tray and a smile.
"Yes, thank you. So, I heard the big news! Congratulations on figuring out what we've all known for years, gentlemen." Augusta said with a smile and a nod in their direction.
"Years? Augusta, we just figured it out ourselves." Sirius replied rather shocked.
"Oh, you sweet dears, I've seen how you looked at one another from the time you were teenagers." She said with a sip of her tea.
"Speaking of hearing things, what do you know about Lucius Malfoy?" Remus asked rather bluntly.
"Oh. That he was a spy for Dumbledore and got the daylights beat out of him after he testified against that bloody rat, Pettigrew." She replied in a matter-of-fact tone.
"So, you believe it?" Sirius asked on the edge of his seat waiting for her answer.
"I believe I do. But I'd love to ask Dumbledore myself just to be positive." She sighed after a brief pause to choose her words.
"Well, that's what we plan to do." Sirius said with his jaw set, making up his mind right there.
"How are Alice and Frank?" Remus asked in a small voice scared of what he might here.
"I think they may be on the mend. It's been a slow process. That Bellatrix did a number on them with the Cruciatus Curse. But they are remembering Neville, I know they knew he was a significant part of their life. They used to draw him pictures, now they say his name. Progress is progress even if it's slow."
The rest of the afternoon was spent watching the boys play and talking about the past and their hopes for the future.
Minerva's owl arrived just after the Longbottoms had left. The three would meet with her two days prior to the full moon for her to properly meet little Harry.
