Brenda headed to her lab. She feared what Tobias would be feeling. Pain, most likely. Tobias seemed like the kind of person who thought pain demanded to be felt. No, wait, that was Augustus Waters. Would he have been easier to make? She should have made somebody else. Somebody easier, softer. But there was no way Brenda could destroy her beautiful Tobias, even if she was bribed with a million dollars. She would die for him if she had to.
"Tobias?" she said softly. "I- I'm sorry about... well, you know." "This isn't real," he said. "It was sad, and scary, and well-written, but it wasn't real. It was just a book, right?" Brenda stiffened. Her mind flashed back to one year earlier, the day she tried so hard to forget, the day she couldn't forget.....Brenda sat down in the school cafeteria. Her best friend, Zoe, sat at her left. Her boyfriend, Chris, sat at her right. Brenda had been talking and laughing with them as they ate. Then Brenda had pulled out her autographed copy of Divergent. "Guys, check it out," she said. "This book is really good!" "What's it about?" asked Zoe. Brenda said, "Finding yourself, never letting anyone define who you are, being brave.." "Hold up!" interrupted Chris. "Is this one of those fangirl books?" "Yeah," Brenda answered. "It's dystopian." "It's stupid, that's what it is," Chris replied. "You should read Twilight. It's better than Divergent. Also manlier. Real men read Twilight." Brenda was angry now. He had insulted the one thing she loved. "You- you are going to insult my favorite book?" "Just saying," Chris added, "You know those sad girls who sob all day? They read Divergent. The sexy bikini girls? They read Twilight." "It is a really good book," smiled Zoe, blushing at Chris. "I can't believe you," Brenda hissed, tears streaming down her face. "You insulted me, my book, and my fandom. I hate you." Chris protested, "Insult you? I was just telling the truth!" "Well," Brenda decided, "Tell the truth to someone else. We're through." Chris turned to Zoe. "You free Friday night?" he asked her. "Yeah," said Zoe. "Want to go see a movie with me? As friends?" Chris added, "No, Zoe. As my girlfriend." As Chris proceeded to make out with Zoe, Brenda ran into the bathroom to cry. "If real boys think my books are stupid," she said, "Maybe the fictional ones will like them better."
Apparently, Brenda had thought wrong. She hated Tobias, but...she could never hate him. He didn't know what he was saying. "Please get in this chair," Brenda ordered, directing Tobias to a white chair looking like one she might sit in at the dentist. "I'm going to do some experiments on you."
