Chapter 4 - Incomplete

Michael loosened the tight collar of his black uniform as he waited for Ashton just outside their base. They're on break from training today but their squad leader gave them a task to skim over the forest area for any possible humans or even vampires. But they doubt it, vampires can't stand this blazing noon sun and that's why they only attack before sunsets or at night.

"Ashton, hurry up!" Michael impatiently called out to his partner.

"I'm coming!" Ashton's voice came from the exit of their base and there he was in his uniform while adjusting the straps of his gun holster.

"Let's go." and they started their day patrol.

It's been four months since they last saw their other two bestfriends. And in those months, they've been training at the Cerberus Daemon Institution with a goal to get stronger and save their bestfriends. They've been planning to enter the Vampire City but they weren't strong enough yet and they can't risk their lives in entering the enemy's den when they know they're dead even before they can save Calum and Luke.

FLASHBACK

"Did we lose them?" Michael whispered, breathing heavily and sprawled out on the ground. They've been running for ours and it seems that the vampire finally gave up on chasing them since it's almost sunrise or maybe it's the lack of human blood.

"I think we did." Ashton confirmed.

"What should we do now, Ash? What can we do to save Calum and Luke? We are nothing compared to those...those...."

"Calm down, Mike. We both should focus on getting stronger ourselves to be able to fight those guys and then we can save Calum and Luke."

ONE WEEK LATER

"I'm gonna die. This place is total ghost town! There's nobody here, Ash! I am so hungry right now, fuck." Michael complained.

It was already dark but they have no idea what time it was. Ashton was just scanning the area while Michael was just sitting beside the river, cupping his hands and drinking some water from it, when he smelled smoke and......grilled meat?

"Michael, do you smell that?" Ashton asked Michael.

Michael sniffed the air repeatedly hoping to catch on what Ashton's talking about.

"Meat? Or maybe I'm just hungry. I don't, Ash." Michael waved it off like it's nothing.

"That's exactly it, Mike. Come on, let's move. I think if we follow the smell we can find some clues." Ashton said with a glimpse of hope and Michael just groaned, too tired to take another step but he followed Ashton anyway.

After what almost felt like hours of walking to Michael, the smell of grilled meat became stronger and it's making their mouths water. It's been months since they last ate meat. Ashton accidentally stepped on a twig causing its noise to echo throughout the dark forest and in an instant they were being held down with their faces facing the dirt and their hands behind them.

"Who are you?" a woman's voice said.

"We're not the enemies!" Ashton immediately answered.

"What are you doing here? And why should we believe you that you're not the enemy? You could be the bait of those filthy vampires!" the voice of a man said.

"I swear, we're not!" Ashton fought back.

"We're not enemies! We're lost and our friends were captured and taken away from us!" Michael explained.
