Chapter 20 – Persona

CALUM'S POV

I can't believe it. Brendon looks....different. He's scary. He looks more like a demon than a human. His skin is somewhat gray-ish blue, he has horns and his collarbone is exposed, showing me the popped out pattern that is engraved on his collarbone, his eyes show nothing but bloodlust. What happened? He's smiling evilly and he's looking at Luke he's his prey. My grip on Luke tightened, causing him to look up at me, finally. I diverted my gaze to him, fear and shock evident in my eyes but he just mouthed the words, "Don't be afraid, it's just Brendon." I gulped and turned my gaze back to Brendon.

"Hey, Calum." He smirked, showing his fangs.

"Brendon, what happened to you?" I asked, referring to his appearance.

"Oh, this? The vampires tortured me so I killed them all. Too bad Vic survived. Tsk." He explained and Luke gasped, I looked down on him.

"V-Vic was the only one who...survived? Then...that means..."

"Yes, Luke. Your friends are dead."

Luke's eyed widened as he started to tremble in fear.

"Brendon, please cut it out... This is not you, your demon is the one speaking. Not you."

"We'll see about that, Calum." He grinned and unsheathed his sword, getting into his stance.

I gulped and walked a a few meters away, making sure the Luke will not get caught up in the fighting, and slowly put him down.

"Cal." he whispered.

"I'll be fine. Just stay here, okay?" I kissed his forehead, then walked towards

Brendon again.

"Why are you doing this, Brendon?" I asked. "I thought we were comrades?" I added.

He laughed. "God, no, Calum. It was all part of the plan. Did you really think that I care about what happens to you, huh?"

That hurt.

"Brendon, you sacrificed yourself for us, remember? You told us to escape so that the Nobles wouldn't hurt us, right?"

He laughed again, causing my blood to run cold. No, this is not the Brendon I know.

"There's this thing called 'Pretending', Calum. I did that to make you believe that I'm not the enemy and that I'm innocent and that I'm not using you guys. You even called Luke a monster even though he told you the truth. I must say I'm touched by your actions, you actually defended me from your lover." He laughed, clutching his stomach and hunching over, as if what he said was the funniest thing in the world.

I bit my lip in guilt as I looked at Luke, but he only shook his head with a smile. As if telling me not to worry. I'm such a fuck up. I sigh and returned my gaze back to Brendon.

"So, you admit that you guys experimented on us if we are capable of being the host to Eden?"

"Yep, that's right."

"And since you found out Luke's capabilities of being the host, you created a clone to deceive us? And all this time Luke thought it was him we were making those memories with but it's not because it was a dream to him and in reality, it was his clone's memories."

"That's correct."

I clenched my fists in anger. I unsheathed my new weapon, gripping the handle tightly and pointing the edge towards him.

"I'm gonna defeat you, Brendon." I promised, my words dripping with venom.

"No, Calum. I'm gonna kill you first before you can even lay a hand on me. This clone is enough to make our dreams come true, too bad it's not the real Luke though but we'll manage. Ah, Kellin is gonna be so pissed." He smirked.
