Why the hell were we out of coffee? I stormed around the house, making an obnoxious amount of noise. Only when I found a small bag of coffee did I act normal,
" Mama, why are you being so loud?"
Rose walked into the kitchen, her eyebrows were scrunched together.
" Cause baby, Mama with no coffee is an evil bitch who will destroy the house."
She nodded, solemnly. Her blue eyes were wide as she walked over closer, her arms extending so I could pick her up. Setting her on the counter I started to get to work, making my life line. As soon as I heard the comforting sound of the water brewing I let out a sigh.
" Mama, why do you stay like that? Why not let me see your cool horns. Uncle Red likes his."
I shrugged, not wanting to tell her that I liked looking normal sometimes. Normal around here wasn't easy, we all had out little bit about us that was almost defined as normal, the rest not so much.
" Because I can. How much sugar does Dad put in your coffee? Cause sugar is bad for little ones."
Her eyes narrowed, that's my girl.
" I like it sweet mama. If it's bitter then it's gross. Lots of creamer, or I will fight you!"
Awe, my little thorn. Good luck Abe, she is just like me! Laughing at the thought of having a mini me I froze. A mini me. Another me. Oh no... I placed a hand over my heart, that was not a good thing. Not at all. When people say that they hope that their children's children are just like them they aren't messing around. Rose just scooted down off the counter and squatted next to me, taking my face in her hands.
" Mama?"
Her blue eyes were filled with worry, when I was her age I hated everyone, but rose was just full of love. Pulling my baby into my arms I held her to my chest.
" You are not allowed to be like me. Not one bit. Be like your Daddy, he is a good man."
She nodded, her little head bobbing.
" But Mama, I want to be just like you! I want to save people and tell Uncle Red his is a pain in the a-"
I slapped my hand over her mouth, shocked that she was about the curse. I needed to be a better role model for my child if she continued to pick up my bad habits. Getting off the ground I set her back up on the counter and fixed our cups of coffee. The studies saying that it stunts a child's growth is completely wrong. Granted I was not as tall as Abe or Red, but they were tall bean poles. Handing Rose her mug she took a sip and smiled, maybe having a child who was a little like me wasn't so bad. After taking my own sip I got an idea.
" Rose get dressed we are going to the park."
She nodded, her eyes lighting up. I haven't really had the chance to actually take her out into the world. She hasn't really left home, unless it was to play outside. We were far from any real human contact, so she wouldn't really be able to handle the world when Abe and I aren't around. Plus it would let me get back into the grove of parenting. Downing the rest of the coffee I grabbed my keys and then my phone. Rose came scampering over to the door with a sweater dress, black leggings and cute little boots. Her silver hair was down and she honestly looked like a tiny angel. When I opened the door she ran over to the car, I could feel her excitement flowing off of her. As we drove down to the park I could feel Rose bouncing in her seat, it was nice to have her out of the house. When we pulled up there was a few children playing on the equipment but not too many. Before I let her out of the car I made her look me right in the eyes,
" Rose, you are not to use any of your powers, you are not to tell people about your family. You may talk about anything but that. Understand?"
She nodded, her eyes darting to the playground. Then she was off, jumping out of the car and zooming over to the swings. It was funny to see her tiny little body go up high, but it was also scary. I guess I had to let her out of my comfort zone sometimes. Then she called me over to swing with her, and for a moment I didn't think I should, I was a grown adult, but the thought of playing with my daughter on a rare outing made me jump on the swing. For a moment it was like a kid again, and it was fun to laugh with her, like nothing bad ever happens. She was my baby and it has been a while since I heard her laugh like this. When she jumped off the swings i jumped after her, chasing her around the park until she was gasping for breath, but still laughing when she could. This is all I ever wanted for her, to be happy. After a bit more climbing and running around she finally was yawning. Picking her up I made my way back to the car, where she soon fell asleep after I finished buckling her up. Hopping into my seat I saw my phone was light up with messages. All from Abe. As it started to ring I put it to my ear,
" Where the hell are you. No note, the car was gone. Where the hell is my daughter?"
I blanked, Abe was acting like an ass now.
" I took her to the park, no big deal. She is my daughter too, besides it good to get her out of the house."
" You could have done that here, there is a backyard the size of texas behind us."
" First off, you don't tell me what to do. And so what? She needs to interact with other people other than us Abe! She is going to need social skills that we can't give her. Growing up at B.P.R.D was hard enough, but at least there was always people. Besides she looks normal enough, why force her to hide with the rest of us?"
The line went quiet and then
" I'm sorry, I just didn't think. For a moment I thought that they took you again with Rose. I'm sorry. I will see you when you get home."
Then he hung up. Way to go Eleanor, piss off the man who cared about you and your daughter. Slamming my head on the steering wheel I let out a sigh,
" Mama, is Dad mad?"
Crap, I had woken her up, forcing a smile onto my face and I shook my head,
" No, he was just worried. Imma drop you off at home and then go out for a bit."
Her face fell, but she didn't say anything. As I drove she fell back asleep which I was glad for. She didn't need to see or hear what would go on between Abe and myself. But I knew as soon as I pulled up he wasn't mad, he was worried. He couldn't lose his daughter, and I should have left a note. It was my fault. Picking up Rose I made my way up onto the porch into his arms. He pressed his lips to my temple and let out a sigh.
" I'm sorry."
I whispered, setting my forehead on his shoulder. After a moment I pulled away, walking into the house to put Rose to bed. As I stood at the door looking down at her I felt arms wrap around me, and he kissed my neck but then froze.
" Eleanor..."
Panic filled me,
" Whats wrong?"
Spinning around I looked into his eyes, which were wide with shock. Then he smiled. Oh lord what was it?
