Chapter 8

"What the hell was that?" Rey asks swinging the door shut behind her.

"Not-- Nothing, it was nothing." Poe pinched the bridge of his nose, squeezing his eyes shut in frustration.

Rey set down her box on her bed and plopped down next to it, "Do you wanna talk about i--"

"No, no it's fine really. Ben and I never got along and you can ask him." Poe rubbed his face aggressively.

Rey nodded her head and fixed her gaze onto the carpet when she decided to change the subject, "I still don't have that roommate," She chuckled

Poe glanced to the bed, "That's weird because people rarely ever don't have roommates."

Rey shrugged, "Works for me, I'm happier being by myself."

Poe nodded and looked away awkwardly.

"Do you mind if I sleep here tonight?" Poe asked, out of nowhere.

"Y-Yeah, um, sure." Rey stammered, caught off guard by his sudden question.

Poe smiled to himself. "Thanks."

Rey nodded, her lips pinching into points, "No problem."

"God." Poe rubbed his face with his hand again in frustration, chuckling in disbelief. "Poe, what the hell is wrong with you?" Rey asked pushing herself off her bed. "I mean, ever since we ran into Ben in the parking lot, you've been acting like such an arrogant shit!"

Poe looked at her, "You don't know what he can do to people."

"What the hell are you talking about?!" Rey laughed hysterically. Poe quirked his eyebrow and looked at Rey funny.

"I mean everyone is just dying to start shit about someone else nowadays I can't even go to my goddamned car with a friend without some TRAUMATIC happening!" Rey shouted, flipping her hair in the process.

Poe chuckled.

Rey squished her face together, "Why are you laughing?!"

"I really think you should've taken up speech and debate instead of chess." Poe flashed a pearly white smile. Rey's heart rate slowed at the sight of his eyes catching the fake lights up above.

"You need sleep, tomorrow is independence day." Poe popped off his shoes next to the door. Rey tossed him a thick blanket she kept in her box and some extra large sweat pants she sometimes slept in during winter.

Poe held up the gray sweatpants and laughed. "Are you sure these will fit me?"

"I found them in my old roommates' side of the closet, his name was Zahid and he was gay. He was a pretty fantastic roommate. Trust me I washed them like seven thousand times." Rey shuffled through her boxes pulling out her blankets and pillows.

"I don't think I'll be better than Zahid but I'll try to be a good roommate. At least for a night."

"I'm gonna go brush my teeth and change in the bathroom, do you know where it is?" Rey asked him gathering her things into her tiny organized black box.

"It down the hall, almost like you're going to the elevator but there's a door that's labeled women, that's the bathroom and there are showers in there as well so you can do that too," Poe says laying out his blanket on the bed.

"Thanks," Rey says walking to the door and opening it with a light tug. She closed the door behind her and walked down the dimly lit hall. The lights above her buzzed and her shoes made a faint tapping sound on the carpet as she took a step.

Rey did as Poe instructed her to and she walked towards the elevator until the bathroom door fell into sight.

She pulled open the door and the scent of lemon cleaner hitting her in the face. "Woah," Rey held her breath from the strong scent.
