They started their search in the large cavern, but after a very thorough inspection, found nothing. They examined cavern after cavern, but found nothing. Endrik continued to chatter to the others about his theories. Tired of searching so many caverns, Fireball started to question their plan. Maybe they weren't looking at the disappearance correctly. Could Endrik be right? It was not the first mysterious disappearance of a sea dragon. It wasn't a coincidence that more than one dragon had disappeared. Fireball needed more information.
"If wizards, or some other force, are kidnapping dragons, where are they taking them? Most dragons are very large, so you can't take them easily and you certainly can't hide them easily." Fireball said.
Endrik responded. "There are a few islands around us. Maybe the wizards take the dragons to one of those islands."
Fireball was starting to think that Endrik's theory was not so far off. Maybe they needed to stop searching caverns, for now, and go back on land. Dronin was headed to the beach where Elyse had told them Dronin was going when he went missing. Fireball thought that might be the logical place to re-start their search.
Some of the dragons decided to call it a day, but Elyse and Endrik wanted to keep looking, so Fireball stayed with them. They headed to the rocky area at the beach. It was more secluded, and many of the sea dragons had enjoyed sunning there for that reason. Dronin enjoyed the intense heat of the rocks. it put him to sleep almost immediately.
Elyse took the lead, looking all around the rocks, concentrating on Dronin's favorite boulder. It was very flat with a slight curve up in the back, just perfect for his head to rest on. Fireball took to the sky. He figured if he looked down on a larger area surrounding the rocks, he might see something out of the ordinary, while Elyse and Endrik performed a more localized and detailed ground search.
After more than an hour of searching high above, Fireball flew back to the others.
"Not much I could see above." Said Fireball. "There is a brush area, just off the beach at the far end, that looks disturbed. We could check it out, but it wasn't much to go on. The only odd thing about it is that it leads to the other side of the island. None of us dragons ever goes there. The elders worry that the volcano might erupt, so we have stayed clear. Did you guys find anything around the rocks?"
"No," said Endrik, looking very disappointed.
"Yes we did," Said a more excited Elyse.
Endrik just looked at Elyse. What had she found, he wondered? He had not found anything and he hadn't noticed her picking up anything either.
