Fireball stayed up with his mother, to talk about the wizards. He wasn't ready to tell her everything, but he needed to understand what his mother knew about his enemy. Malvina began by telling her son what she knew about magic and wizards' wands. She also explained that the reason wizards flew with dragons was deeper than dragons transporting them around. Centuries ago both the dragons and wizards discovered that the dragons' thick, leathery skin had varying degrees of protection against spells cast at them. Khalid and Malvina both had very thick skin and were more resistant than most to spells. Malvina hoped the legacy of their nearly impenetrable hides might carry on to their son. Taking in all his new-found knowledge, Fireball smiled and nodded as his mother continued to impart what she knew of wizards. He also deduced that his sea dragon friends likely had thinner leather skin, making them more vulnerable to the evil wizards' spells.
Malvina assured Fireball that he should not limit his understanding of wizards to the few he had encountered or that his father had worked with. There were both good and evil wizards, just like dragons. Khalid had always said that his son would one day work closely with wizards and together they would help make the world a much safer place. His mother took the opportunity to remind her son of his father's dream and then hugged her little Fireball.
"Your father worked with wizards and he often dreamed that you would one day work in a whole new way with them, and that side by side you would help rid Terrenox of some very evil forces. Only time will tell if your father was right, but be open to what lies ahead."
Fireball listened to his mother as she recounted many old stories of wizards and dragons working together. Slowly as he continued to listen to his mother's soft voice, he began to drift off to sleep. Malvina tucked her son in and went off to bed.
Awaking to Kaida's voice, Fireball looked around. He was unsure of the time, but he still felt tired. Kaida called in to the cave again 15 minutes later. A sluggish Fireball realized he had snoozed again. He jumped up and raced around to get ready. He was out of the cave quickly, after the second wake-up call, although Kaida did not look impressed when he greeted her. She didn't say anything even after they picked up Drake and Fausto. After they flew down to the water's edge the three male dragons started talking. Finally, giving up on her attempt to ignore Fireball, Kaida joined into the conversation.
