Amos sat down, relieved, and thanked his friend. Searching again for the evil wizard, all he saw was a charcoal black patch of grass. Just a few embers remained where the wizard once stood. Fireball had shot a blast of fire to protect his friend and incinerated the evil wizard.
The two friends paused for a moment, then Fireball realized that it was another dragon kidnapping that Amos had interrupted. They ran over to the dragon who was still lying unconscious. It was Fausto. He was very heavy, but Amos used a spell to make him float above the ground, and they brought him back to the caves where he could recover safely. Behind the wall, the spell protected them. The wizards could not see them through the shield. Amos hoped that would keep them out, but he knew it was no guarantee.
"This is not good," said Amos. "If they are here grabbing dragons again, it is safe to assume that Marcello is back here and continuing his testing. I suppose it would be good news for the prince, but really all Alexander wants is the whole world to be safe."
"Maybe Alexander needs to come here," said Fireball. "He could fight Marcello here and we could help him."
"No!" replied Amos harshly. "Alexander wants the fight to come to him, where he has the advantage. If they fought here, this whole island would likely be destroyed, and he would be fighting at a disadvantage. We need a plan and we need it now. I'm afraid Marcello is testing some evil magic here and wants to use it against the prince."
Fireball looked over at Amos who appeared to be in a trance. Worried, he flew over and bumped him. He had hoped the impact would awake his friend, but instead the wizard tumbled backward and started to fall. He awoke from his trance just before he hit the ground, getting one arm out to soften the impact a bit.
Flying back over to see if his friend was okay, Fireball tried to help Amos up. The wizard, looking a little angry, spoke sharply to the little dragon.
"What were you doing? Why did you knock me over?"
"You were in some kind of trance." Fireball responded, in embarrassment. "I was worried somebody had taken control of you."
Amos shook his head, as he brushed off Fireball's help and stood up. At first, he was a little shaky on his feet. His right leg was weak, and a bruise was already forming on his thigh, exposed under his disheveled robe. As he regained his balance he saw a large root on the ground that he had fallen on. Using his wand, Amos mended his bruised leg then turned and shrunk the root to almost nothing. Then he turned back to Fireball, explaining why he was in a trance.
"I guess I should thank you for your concern Fireball, my friend. But I was not in a trance. I was concentrating, so that the prince and I could communicate with each other. I told him what was going on here and he wants us to get Marcello to follow us. The prince also gave me a few very powerful spells that he is confident I can handle."
