"Its been a rough few years for her but she finally found some friends." D chuckled. He could see his breathe as the difference in temperature to the room and his inside collided. It was probably cold enough to freeze you to death. "You wouldn't believe the things Luffy said and did, I told you about him. It would be hard to find very many guys like him. He's truly one in a million he is."
He looked at his hands as he remembered a time when there were more like Luffy. It was a simpler time that was for sure.
"She's finally able to stand proudly of who she is instead of fearing it. The day when you can come out of hiding may well be closer than we expect." He looked up at the one he was speaking to. "Nico Olvia."
Olvia appeared suspended as the ice held her off the ground. And with her eyes closed one might imagine she was sleeping. Behind her deeper in the room shadows of others in the same state as her could be seen. It was of course the scholars of Ohara hidden away from the world.
He could still remember when he had appeared in the center of them. The heat of the flames licking at the walls and books. The shouts of desperation as the scholars tried to save as many books as they could. Each moment passing brought the loss of thousands of ancient lives. It had hurt so much to see the hatred and fear the World Government had for him and the past. No one deserved to be obliterated like they had.
Professor Clover had recognized him almost instantly. It had taken a little longer before the others had realized. One had even yelled at him for not grabbing books.
"■■■■■" Professor Clover spoke aloud and the room froze. Literally as D had frozen the flames.
"It is a sorrowful day when my mistakes bring about a repeat of the past. I am truly sorry for your pains that you have suffered because of me." D said with a respectful bow.
"Are you here to save us?" Professor Clover asked.
"I came because a friend of mine lives here but it seems she isn't here but elsewhere on this island."
A silver haired woman stepped forward. "We don't care about our own lives. Will you save the treasures that are here? We will pay whatever the price is." She looked like she wanted to say more but hesitated.
"Nico Olvia," he said her name and she took a step back, shocked. "If the price was your daughter's soul would you still pay it?"
Before she could answer Professor Clover stepped forward. "I may be old but my soul should have some value. A child should not suffer because of their parent's choices."
"The request was not made by you. Your answer?"
"I would let everything here burn and vanish if it could guarantee my daughter's safety." There was no doubt in her eyes when she answered.
Everyone gasped in surprise as the books began to glow. And to their astonishment the embers and ash of the ones that had already burned glowed as well. One of the scholars noticed that the books that had already been thrown into the lake were glowing too.
He stretched out a hand. "Take my hand and gift me your soul. All of the treasures here will be saved."
Again she didn't hesitate. Taking his hand she gave up her soul.
"What's going on?!" One of the scholars exclaimed as he and the others began to glow.
Before any of them could respond or say anything more they vanished and the flames surrounding the room came to life once more. All of the books remained where they were and the only ones left was Olvia and himself.
