Nothing great was ever accomplished without making sacrifices.
Isaiah
One Month Later
"Do you hear that?" Erika asked me through the dim room. I looked up at her and rose a brow for her to continue because I didn't hear anything. "It's silent, meaning no one is here."
"Okay?" I responded, being careful of how I moved my jaw. I don't know if he broke it all the way when he hit me, but he definitely did do something to it. For two weeks I couldn't talk because it pained me too bad to move it. Even now when I talk there's still a sting, but it's not as bad.
"Earlier when they let me upstairs I could overhear them talking saying they wouldn't be here for the rest of the day. We can find a way to get out of here!" she exclaimed and I narrowed my eyes.
Once every other day, they come get us one by one and allow us to take a shower and to eat a small meal. If they didn't do that then we'd be dead by now.
"How Erika?" I asked slightly annoyed.
"The window up there," she said pointing to it. "It has to lead to outside. If we work together we can make it work."
I looked up at the window and winced, shaking my head.
"I'm sorry to burst your little bubble, but there's no way my body is going to allow me to make it up there," I told her with my jaw clenched so I wouldn't have to move it as I spoke.
"Isaiah please, we have to at least try. Who knows when we'll get the chance to do this again? Plus we need to hurry because I don't know when they'll be coming back."
"Erika-"
"Don't you want to get out of here? I don't know about you, but I'm tired of staring at these walls all day. I can't stay here any longer."
I looked down at my free hands and looked back to her. Once they realized I wasn't a threat they removed the chains from me so I don't have those anymore, which is a bonus.
"Do you think you can pick me up and help me reach it?" she asked as she stood up and walked over to stand under the window. Slowly, I got up too and walked over.
"We don't even know if the window is open."
"We'll never know until we try," she commented and I sighed. Nothing bad can happen from trying, right?
"I'll hold both my hands together while you step on them so I can lift you," I instructed. She placed her hand on my shoulder to steady herself before putting her foot in my hand and pushing up. With a struggle she climbed up until she was on my shoulders. "Is it locked?" I strained out trying to keep both of us from falling.
"No, but it's jammed. Hold on," she muttered before she began yanking at it to open. I squeezed my eyes shut and fought with myself to keep from collapsing to the ground.
"Erika... please hurry up."
"I am, give me a sec!" she yelled before yanking harder until I heard a pop. I looked up but quickly closed my eyes as dirt was falling from the opening. "It's open, I did it!"
"Is there a way you can pull yourself out?"
"Yeah, there's something I can grab right here. I need you to help me lift myself up higher."
"You're killing me," I grumbled as I reached up to grab her foot. Once I had it, with all the strength I could muster, I straightened my arm out and helped to push her out the window.
"We did it! I'm out! It worked!" she cheered with a huge smile on her face. "Grab my hand, I'll pull you through."
"I can't, Erika," I mumbled taking a step back and sitting down against the wall under the window. I was seeing stars and knew I was on the verge of falling out.
