Dads hold our hands for a little while but hold our hearts for forever.

Ava woke up at nine that morning, but we were all still only like two hours into our sleep so Alex took her downstairs to watch a movie.

When I woke up it was after two and I looked up to see my Dad also awake. He was staring at the ceiling with a blank expression while me and my Mom still laid next to him.

I moved in my spot a little to get more comfortable, but froze instantly when my Dad hissed and closed his eyes tightly.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. Are you okay? Do you need your medicine?" I began to ramble as I sat up but he shook his head.

"I'm fine," he grumbled with his voice deep and hoarse. I frowned up at him as my Mom opened her eyes.

"What's wrong?" she asked softly, but he didn't say anything. She looked over at me and asked the time so I told her. "Two? God, I didn't mean to sleep this long. You were supposed to take your medicine hours ago!" she exclaimed to my Dad while she rushed to get out the bed.

When she left out the room I looked back down at him to see he was struggling to sit up.

"Hand me my crutch please, baby," he mumbled pointing to where it rested against the wall. I didn't hesitate to give it to him and help him out the bed.

I wrapped an arm around his waist while his rested on my shoulder, and walked with him down the hall towards the stairs.

"No piggy back rides for a while," he told me with a small laugh making me look up at him. I know he tried to brush it off with a laugh, but I also know that he's upset that he can't do as much as he wants now with his injuries.

"I'll be okay. I can walk in the mornings," I assured him. We'll be breaking our routine by doing that, but him getting better is more important to me.

"Daddy!" Ava screamed running towards him once we made it down. Before she could run into his legs I quickly picked her up so he wouldn't get hurt. "No Sissy, I want Daddy!"

"Daddy can't hold you right now Ava," I told her when she tried reaching for him. Her face frowned up at my words and her bottom lip began to tremble. "Ava-"

"Pass her to me," my Dad spoke making me look up at him with wide eyes. Before I could protest he was already lifting her out of my arms and into his. He balanced her on his torso with his good arm, but even with that her body was still pressed against his injured ribs so I know he was hurting, even though he wouldn't admit it.

"Daddy you have a boo boo," she said pointing to a cut he had on his forehead near his hairline.

"I know, it hurts," he told her and her eyes widened in shock.

"It does?" he nodded. "I kiss it better," she told him before grabbing his face and placing a kiss to the top of his head. He looked down at me and had a smile on his face. I did too.

"It feels so much better, Princess. Thank you," he replied giving her a kiss. "Go to your sister, Daddy needs to go get dressed."

"Get dressed to go where?" I asked as I took her from him. This time she didn't throw a fit because she already got what she wanted.

"I'm not going anywhere, but I have people coming over soon and I look like shit," he answered rubbing his head. "When everyone comes I'll need you to tell me about your friend Isaiah, okay?"

"Okay," I mumbled quietly before he walked away, well limped away.

After that I went upstairs to Alex's room to see he was playing his xbox while laying across the bed, and I asked him if Ava could stay in here while I went to take my shower.
