Today was our schools basketball try outs and I was beyond nervous. All of the girls trying out had played for years and I had never played. So, as you can assume, I'm terrible in comparison to them.
I walked into the warm locker room, girls getting their practice clothes on and putting their hair up into ponytails. There were conversations every where, and I was thanking it inside of me because this means their attention wasn't on me.
I scanned the room, my eyes landing on a girl with raven black hair and a skinny figure. She had her shirt over her head, messing around with the other girls, earning laughs. She pulled the shirt over her head and her eyes landed on me, her smile fading. The other girls attention landed on my body too, odd looks on their faces. "Who are you?" One of them asked rudely. "I'm new." I said back calmly, walking to an empty part of the locker room. They all shrugged and went back to their conversations. Although, I still felt eyes on my back, but I didn't bother to look back and investigate.
I tore off my school uniform and put on the basketball shorts and t-shirt I had packed earlier this morning. I lightly sprayed myself with perfume and put on an extra coat of deodorant, knowing that I was going to be sweaty afterwards.
Someone walked towards where I was standing and slammed the locker in front of me. "Lockers are for team members only." She said, smirking and walking away back to her group. I sighed. The girls on this team weren't very nice, were they?
"Hurry up girls! Try outs begin in ten!" An older lady screamed throughout the locker room, one I had assumed to be the coach. The sound of zippers and running filled my ears. I closed my back and headed outside.
                              -
The coach had us try free throws- which I was luckily good at- one by one, introducing ourselves. I was last, unfortunately. The other girls had cut and pushed me out of being in the middle where I formerly was. When it came to my turn, I shoot all three throws in perfect and turned around to introduce myself. The girls were in awe and any of the doubts that they had before had vanished. The coach welcomed me and told me to go and sit by the rest of the team on the bleachers.
"This is varsity basketball, and we do not take lightly with slackers. Where you may see this only as a high school sport, you will be trained at college level and you will be expected to play as well as that too. Conditioning will be the next two weeks, all days of the week after school and from 12pm-9pm on the weekends. Got it?" The coach yelled. We all agreed and she smiled. "Now, you. New girl, play one on one with our best player, Amber. This will prove if you're worthy enough to be on our team." She said. I gulped and stood up, a few of the girls whispering and giggling softly. The girl that I had seen in the locker room earlier, Amber, was the one that I was playing.
It was harder than I thought. This Amber girl was amazing at this that it was almost unreal. I nearly lost, but the last three pointer than I shot saved me from doing so. I sighed in relief and wiped a strain of sweat off of my forehead. "Excellent work, new girl!" The coach yelled. "Almost no one can out score Amber!" Her assistant said in surprise. The girls looked shocked and some of them had scared expressions on their faces. Amber smiled and raised her arm motioning for a high five, but when I slapped her hand, she grabbed mine and pulled me in for a side hug. Her mouth came close to my ear and she whispered, "You're going to regret that." She said, giving my shoulder a squeeze and smiling again.

After try outs, we were all dismissed back into the locker room. I was exhausted after this practice and I'm sure I smelt absolutely horrid. On the bright side, I think that I got on the good side of the coach but unfortunately, the bad side of the star player.
When most of the girls cleared out of the room, it was quieter and the air smelled much nicer than before. I stripped from the sweaty clothes and put on my extra change of clothes; a sweater and leggings along with my soft boots. When finished, I turned to leave but I was slammed against the locker but none other than this Amber girl. I gave her an annoyed look, "What do you want?" I asked. She rolled her eyes. "I just wanted to say good luck, and that I know you're new to this. So, if you ever need any help, feel free to contact me at this number." She said, handing me a piece of paper. She started walking away and turned around to say, "By the way, you're gorgeous." She said, winking and walked towards the door.
I smiled and rolled my eyes. Maybe this whole basketball thing wouldn't be so bad after all.
