AND before two in the morning
are you proud or are you proud?
I didn't favor parties, especially not cliche parties like this. A masquerade party. A high school one at that, meaning I had to be around the loud and ignorant people I had to be around five days a week even more. Although, the idea of this made it all the better. Masks and lost identities, which is the only reason my friends were able to drag me here without a huge fight.
There were many people here, all shielded behind masks. My friends had decided to match colors so we wouldn't lose each other, but that didn't last very long, considering that they all wondered off themselves to dance with strangers for the night. This being said, I was alone at one of the tables, sipping on whatever was in the wine glass. What made this party even more the fun, it was hosted at some snobby rich kids house, meaning the area was very, very big and still full of people. I could recognize some, but most I couldn't. This game was the only thing entertaining me.
"Where have you been?" My friend sounded from behind me, stumbling closer to me, obviously already having too much to drink. "Kira, you need to sit down." "Why? The fun just started." She said, grabbing my hand and leading me to the floor, tossing me into the crowd with a smile on her face. I mentally noted to scold her later, along with the other two of my friends that accompanied me.
Even if I tried pushing myself through the crowd, it was no use. I was stuck in the middle of people dancing and laughing together. Even if the party was about class, the stench of marijuana and whiskey was in the air, along with the weaker smell of perfume.
But my eyes locked with someone else's. I couldn't exactly tell if they were male or female, and I definitely couldn't tell who they were, but they walked towards me anyways. "Can I have this dance?" The velvet voice coated my ears, the stranger planting a kiss on my hand. Giving in, deciding that I either dance with them or stand in the middle of bodies for the rest of the night. "Sure." I said back, wrapping my hands around the persons neck, them placing their hands on my waist soon after. "People here aren't very responsible." She said, this making it clear that she was a female. I laughed at this. "Did you come here with anyone?" She asked, looking into my eyes that wasn't covered by the mask. "I did, my friends, but they're long gone now." I said, rolling my eyes. "That's no fun. Who's driving?" She asked. "Oh, I'm sorry, am I being too nosey?" She questioned after her former statement. I smiled. "You aren't. It's nice to talk to someone who isn't drunk or high." I said. She smiled back and pulled me closer, the soothing, slow music filling my ears.
"Want to go somewhere?" She asked.
She had lead me out to a garden area, us being the only ones here. "How can you navigate this place? It's huge." I asked, earning a laugh from the taller girl. "My friend lives here, actually. I've been friends with her for some time, so I know this house like the back of my hand. Somehow, anyways." I chuckled. "It would take me years to-" "Hey! Am-" a girl said from behind us, stopping when she realized that I was beside her. "Yes?" She said, turning to her side, facing the girl. "I came to see if you wanted to dance with us, but it seems that you're a bit busy at the moment." She sighed. "Give me twenty minutes, thirty at the most." The other girl sighed and walked off.
"You can go now if you want. I don't want to intrude on anything." I said, messing with my thumbs. "They'll be fine without me." She said, placing two fingers on the bottom of my chin and making eye contact with me. "Okay." I said, trying my best not to stutter.
The music from inside of the house was still hearable, even if the sound had faded just a bit. A familiar song started to play and I smiled. She smiled too, grabbing my hand softly and pulling me closer to her, beginning to dance again. "I-" "Be quiet now, love. Enjoy the moment." She said, tucking my head under her chin, stroking my hair. It smelled of flowers here, and the moon shone on our already hidden faces, only enough to illuminate our faint smiles at one another. The only sounds were the sounds of nature and the quiet song that skipped through the air around us.
Eventually, she decided it was time for her to go and join her friends.
"But wait," I said, grabbing her wrist. "Who are you? Behind the mask?" She smiled. "It's a secret. The first letter of my name is 'A', and we attend the same school." She said, still smiling. She planted a soft kiss on my forehead.
"Hope you can find me, princess."
And with that, she was gone.
