(TRIGGER Chapter)
"I'm listening."
"Last night I got a call from the hospital and well there isn't really a good phone call that a person can get from an hospital at eight in the night."
I listened attentively while Jonah glazed his tongue over his lips to begin speaking again." The call --"
"Its okay, take your time, I'm not going anywhere."
Jonah inhaled slowly for a few seconds before opening his mouth.
"My dad , he um passed off last night."
There was nothing I could say for my dad had passed on too.And back then I didn't want to hear any of the everything will be alright bull crap that my therapist fed me so I wouldn't even dare try it with Jonah. "Look, I'm not even sad or any of that sappy feelings stuff if that's what you're wondering so don't even try that 'I'm sorry for your loss foolishness."
" I wasn't going to." I stated.
" good." He responded back. "So, how'd he end up in the hospital?""Long story that I really don't want to talk about right now."
"I have time and, so do you."
Jonah just nodded his head in agreement at me before running his hands over his face.
" I'll tell you but I swear to God Shay if what I'm about to tell you ever and I mean EVER leaves this room I'll never forgive you."" It'll never leave this room." I assured him. " I actually, at one point in time used to be in an actual home, but circumstances caused me to move from foster home to foster home for a while."
" Back in 2008 my dad and I used to live in Detroit Michigan. Yeah you know just the two of us since I was born. Its always been that way. We never really had much but we made what we had work for us."
" What about your mom?" I prodded.
" She left after I was born."
I said nothing but instead nodded my head in understanding." Growing up life wasn't so bad at all. I mean apart from the shootouts that happen every other day it was a nice place to live. I had a few friends back then and we'd find the most awesome stuff to do together. We had fun but of course it never lasted."
" My dad was actually a Carpenter. He was, he was the best actually. We were never poor, but, we were never rich either we were stuck in the abis of both. My dad smoked at least a pack a day believe it or not and he was a drinker at that. But, he never yet, crossed the line and he never became too drunk for me or too drunk to remember who I was."
" I mean how could he? We'd been taking care of each other from as long as I could remember." "One day I was at home and my dad he started complaining about having chest pains and a funny feeling in his stomach so I suggest that we go see a doctor but around the time that my dad started to feel sick we were practically out of money so we couldn't go to the doctor."
Jonah sighed this time with a little more emotion on his face and you could tell that whatever he was gonna say next you couldn't possibly like that.
"So me being a stupid little idiot with absolutely no working brain actually suggested that he should continue to work until he had enough money to go to the doctor."
I stared at his blankly trying to hold back what was trying to leave my mouth. "He was doing fine for a while you know, everything almost seemed okay, until one day he came home from work and the second he walker through the door he collapsed unto the floor."
I have to make him stop talking because whether or not he wants to admit it he was too emotional to continue this story. Just looking at him you wouldn't understand but his voice? Told an absolutely different story. Jonah was hurting. "You don't have to tell me the rest if you don't feel like it." I suggested to him.
