Adeline Zimmerman

I walked to the school. Bree had left for school long before I was ready so I decided to just walk by myself. I had my hands in my coat pockets and suddenly a boy ran into me.

"Oi! I am apologise!" the boy yelled in German with a heavy American accent as we fell. I sat up and he picked up my book bag.

"It's okay," I said. He was really cute and probably no older than myself. I smiled.

"I'm just late for my first day of class. And being an American in Germany is not the best time," he muttered as he helped me up.

"Well, I am walking to Berlin elementary so if you would like to join me," I offered. He smiled.

"Thank you. I don't know how I can repay you," he said and I smiled.

"Well, I am Adeline," I said and he smiled.

"I'm Wilson," he said as we walked towards the school. I smiled back at him.

"Wilson. That is a lovely name," I said and he smiled even bigger.

"Well, you guys will have a group project. Adeline, would you mind working with Wilson?" Miss Ziegler asked. Bree gave me a sad look but I nodded.

"Of course," I said as Wilson walked towards me. Miss Ziegler nodded at Wilson who pulled his lips into a line.

"Actually, Adeline, Wilson, will you two meet me outside?" Miss Ziegler asked. I nodded and Wilson led the way out.

"How may we help you, Miss Ziegler?" Wilson asked as we stood against the wall.

"Adeline, Wilson will teach you English and you guys will give information to the Americans together, okay?" she asked. I looked between them as they gave me an expectant look.

"What if Germany finds out?" I whispered. Wilson touched my shoulder.

"I'm an American. I'll take the blame with my family," he said and I nodded.

"Okay. I'll help," I said and they smiled.

"Go home. I'll tell the class that Adeline didn't feel well and Wilson took her home," she said more to herself than to us. Wilson grabbed my arm and led the way to the street. I glanced back as Miss Ziegler walked into the classroom.

My life as I knew it was over.

I walked home and thought about Wilson and Adeline as I climbed the stairs to the apartment. Was I a terrible person for letting two twelve year olds become spies for the American forces? Probably but they trusted me and they thought that this was right.

"Welcome to the mess," Ada said as I walked in. I heard screaming from inside that was distinctly Wolf and Heiko. I walked into the kitchen where the guys were yelling.

"You don't know what is going on out there Heiko! It doesn't matter what we think while we are sitting here in the apartment," Wolf yelled.

"They are fighting for something that is wrong!" Heiko shouted.

"What is going on?" I asked as I stood between the two boys.

"Your brother is saying that my brother is supporting whatever Hitler and his goons are doing," Wolf said as he leaned against the counter.

"Last I checked, he is out there fighting for Hitler!" Heiko yelled. I gave him a pointed look before sighing.

"We all trusted Hitler at first, Heiko. You were six and you grew up gay and having to hide it but Wolf and I remember how happy everyone was under Hitler fixing the economy," I said, "They don't know what is happening yet." Heiko gave me a look and walked out of the room.

"He should be a lawyer," Wolf said and I looked at him.

"And you should know better than to fight with a sixteen year old that doesn't remember what we do," I said. He shrugged.

"Did you talk to that boy, Wilson?" Wolf asked. I nodded.

"I got a little Aryan girl that is willing to do it as well," I said and he nodded.

"The sooner Americans know what we know the sooner the corruption will be exposed," he said and I took his hand.

"So English is actually really easy," Wilson said as we sat in the soda shop. We had gone to my house and talked to my parents. They eyed Wilson weirdly but I assured them that Wilson believes Hitler.

"Easy for you to say! You grew up speaking English," I said as I took a sip of my pop.

"I guess you have a point," he said with a laugh. I smiled and picked up one of the fries we ordered.

"But what is the first thing you are going to teach me?" I asked. He smiled as he said something in English. "What was that?" I asked.

"Hello, my name is Adeline," he said and I smiled.

"Say it slowly so I can hear it," I said. He nodded.

"Hello, my name is Adeline," he whispered in English. I took a deep breath.

"Hell'o, my name iz Adeline," I said in English and he chuckled. "What? I am trying!" I exclaimed in German.

"It was kinda weird to hear it with your accent," he said and I pouted.

"I am trying," I complained and he smiled.

"I know that. But, it's uh... cute," he said as his face turned bright red. I felt my cheeks heat up and I took a sip of my soda.

"Hell'o, my name is Adeline," I whispered, slower in English. He smiled.

"That's right," he told me and I smiled at him. "Next thing in English is," he swallowed before he said the next sentence.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"I'm an American spy," he whispered as he took a sip of his soda. I swallowed.
