Alaric Zimmerman

For the first time in my life, I felt like I was going to be dead the second I finished blinking. I held Bernadette against my chest inside the ditch that we dove into as French bombs dropped around us.

"Alaric?" she whispered, "I'm sorry." I looked down at her and gave her a confused look.

"For what?" I asked. She jumped as a bomb exploded right next to us on the top left of the ditch. I covered her and covered my face.

"These are my people that are bombing your forces," she said. I shook my head.

"It's not your fault," I said as I pulled her closer to me.

"It's not your fault," Jack said as he pulled my closer to him as I cried. I had to burn the body of a two year old girl and as soon as it was done, I broke. Luka got help and Jack ordered them to let him take me.

"She looked so helpless, like she didn't even understand what was happening," I sobbed and he touched my head.

"Listen, there is a lot of children that are protected. We have a children's block. Would you like it if I make you in charge of taking care of them? I can tell them some bullshit that it will show you what is wrong with being a gay man," he said. I nodded and he put a blanket over my shoulders as he walked to the phone in the living room.

I missed home. But what was home anymore. Alaric was gone to war, Adeline and my parents thought that I was kidnapped, and Heiko's house was never home to me. What was home? Even if I went home, my father would know that I was gay and attempt to kill me.

I didn't realise that I was staring off into the darkness until Jack touched my shoulder and I looked up. He sat next to I sat up straight.

"You are going to report to the children's block in the morning. Just teach them and take care of them. I promise you that they will love you," he said and I shrugged.

"Can I go back to my block? I kinda want to talk to Zach and Erick," I said. He held back a disgusted look and yet smiled.

"I apologise for that. Erick is just a little hard headed and will get himself shot," he said and I nodded.

"I can tell," I said and he stood.

"I'll escort you to the block," he said and I stood slowly.

Once I got back to the block, Zach was the first person to walk up to me and he pushed me into one corner. I was shocked until I realised that he was laughing. He was screwing around.

"Surprise attack!" he yelled as we started laughing louder. We got some dirty looks but we were laughing too hard.

"What was that?" I asked as we slid to the floor because our laughter was too much.

"I don't know. It's just a good day," he said and I smiled as we leaned against the wall.

"They are moving my job," I told him and he looked at me.

"To where?" he asked.

"The children's block. I'm suppose to take care of them during the day," I told him and he looked at the ceiling.

"That's better than emptying out people's belongings," he said. I smiled slightly.

"At least you had belongings," I told him. He looked at me.

"My family had nothing. I don't even know where my sister and mother are," he stated and I dragged my foot across the dirt.

"Everyone get outside!" a soldier yelled and we jumped up before walking outside. We lined up in roll call order and Zach and I exchanged a look before looking at the soldier that called us out. There was three other soldiers with him.

"What are you looking at gay boy?" one of the soldiers yelled at me. He grabbed me as my eyes grew and he went to throw me on the ground. Until Luka and Jack walked up.

"What is going on?" Jack asked. I looked at him and he glared at the soldier holding me. "Let him go."

"Sir, he was out of formation," the soldier told him. Jack twisted his arm making me fall and Luka looked at me for a second with a look that showed that he was trying not to run to my side.

"I do not care if he was out of formation. What I do care about is that you don't grab him like that. Go back in formation," Jack ordered and I ran to my spot next to Zach.

"Lucky, b*****d," Zach whispered. Indeed I was.
