Adeline Zimmerman

(January 1944)

Wilson and I sat on the couch in his house and took a deep breath. He was rubbing his temples as I sat up straight.

"Are you certain this is real?" he asked.

"I know for a fact that I am pregnant," I said and he looked at me.

"I don't want to be a bad father," he said and I shook my head as I touched his leg.

"You won't be... if you stay," I whispered. I was frightened that he would leave me. He was the man that I had ever loved and losing him would be my personal hell. He took my hands and held them between us.

"I will never leave you, Addie," he said and I hugged him.

"My parents were a bit upset," I muttered and he shrugged.

"I don't care. We will be fine," he said and I nodded as he kissed my hair.

Alia Zimmerman

(March 1945)

My Dearest, Alaric,

It fills my heart to write you this information however, I wish I was able to tell you in person. I don't want to keep this a secret from you.

Depending on when you return, you will be a father to what I hope is a baby boy to continue our family name.

I know that my letter is short but the joy that is bubbling in me is making it difficult for me to focus on any singular thought.

All my love,

Your loving wife, Alia

I put the letter into an envelope and put the address on the front. I touched my stomach and smiled. I was pregnant and it was something that unexpected, especially when we were planning to leave in the middle of the night to go to America as soon as we could.

I hummed as I danced around the living room. There was a knock on the front door and I remembered what Alaric told me. Hold the door and use the door as my first weapon. I opened the door.

"Wolf," I breathed as he looked back at me with a defeated look.

"Alia," he said as he tried stepping forward but I put my hand out:

"Don't come any closer," I said and he looked at my hand.

"You got married," he commented and I pulled my hand to my chest.

"You shouldn't be here. My husband will hurt you," I said. Part of me still cared if Alaric wanted to kill Wolf and yet another part of me didn't give a shit if Alaric killed Wolf.

"You married him," he said.

"What do you want?" I asked and he reached for me again. I pushed his hands away and he tried to grab me. I screamed for help and our neighbours ran out. The sixteen year old grabbed Wolf and tackled him to the floor away from me.

"Mrs. Zimmerman, are you okay?" Mr. Carlson, the seventy year old man across the hall, asked. I tried to catch my breath as they dragged Wolf out. I nodded.

"Yes, I am fine," I said as Wolf gave me look that made me happy that Alaric found me.

Adeline Zimmerman

(April 1945)

I thought that Adalwolf was dead and yet he was standing next to me with his arm around me as we watched my hair piece sink. I don't think he realised that it wasn't a real flower so it was going to sink either way.

"Adalwolf, do you want to go home before we leave?" I asked, breaking the silence. He looked at the buildings behind us and I swallowed.

"I wouldn't call this home," he commented.

"I meant Berlin," I told him and his eyes shone but quickly left.

"I can't go to Berlin. Mother and Father would kill me," he said. I looked at the ground. Alone for a little bit longer.

"I will get you passage to America then I will go to Berlin to get Alaric," I told him. He looked at Jack.

"Get Jack there and I will go with you. Your fiancé and Alaric's wife will meet him, right?" he asked.

"I want to stay with you, Adal," Jack interrupted. Adalwolf took his attention from me to Jack.

"I need to be alone with my family so I can say good bye without someone trying to kill you," Adalwolf stated and Jack squeezed his hand.

"Okay. Then things will be different in America," Jack said. Adalwolf nodded.

*

(May 1945)

Adalwolf and I ran through the streets of Berlin. Russians invaded Berlin and were firing weapons everywhere to the point that we could only run.

"Where is Alaric?" Adalwolf asked. I looked around. The invasion was worse than we thought it was and brought Adalwolf right into the mess.

"I don't know. He is suppose to be here," I said as I looked around. I saw a gun pointed in our direction and I pulled Adalwolf down as it fired. "Run!" We took off but Adalwolf was really out of breath really too soon.

"Just go, Adeline," he said as we ducked into an alley. I shook my head.

"I'm not leaving you," I said and he grabbed my hand.

"Move Tiny!" someone yelled in German and two people ran into the alley with a girl. The smaller guy of the two leaned against the wall.

"Alaric!" Adalwolf and I caught him in a hug and he lifted one arm in air.

"Thank god you two are okay but you aren't suppose to be here," Alaric scolded us.

"We weren't leaving without you," I said and Alaric looked at the other guy.

"Do you think we can make it with them?" Alaric asked the other guy.

"I might be able to get a car running but then you have to be the gunnery," the guy said.

"We got this, Engel. Let's get to Booya and get out of Berlin," Alaric said as they grabbed each other's arms.

"Wait, what the hell are you doing?" I asked. Alaric smirked.

"The same thing we always do as Zimmermans.... cause more problems for people," Alaric said and both my brothers smiled at each other.
