Adeline Zimmerman

(May 1939)

Adalwolf and I were watching the window, carefully. Well, we were watching the weather as Alaric was trying to get into the apartment. We were waiting for one sign and as Alaric got the door open, we saw it.

"Alaric! There's clouds covering the sun! It's ice cream weather!" I yelled as I jumped onto him. He caught me and stumbled back a little.

"Uh, you guys, you know that I have to go to work and-" he started but Adalwolf and I both grabbed his hands and he laughed. "Adalwolf, you are sixteen. You don't need to hold my hand," Alaric said, shaking Adalwolf off.

"Then let's get ice cream," Adalwolf said and Alaric groaned but smiled.

"Come on," Alaric said and I held his hand tighter.

(May 1945)

I watched as my brothers adjusted their clothes. We each had a bag filled with memories and Alaric picked up his bag, which was the biggest of the three bags.

"We have a solid hour before we get to the American base. We should get moving," Alaric said as he loaded his hand gun.

"Is a gun necessary?" Adalwolf asked as he picked up his bag. Alaric slid the clip into the gun before nodding.

"Russians hate us. And we hate them," Alaric said as he put his gun in the back of pants. I picked up my bag and looked at Alaric.

The way he held himself and the way he looked so different that the brother that Adalwolf and I came to know. Alaric's jaw was defined and older. I glanced at the wall. He grew a solid six inches and gained muscle.

My eyes drifted to Adalwolf. His features in a sense were defined as well but they were defined in a way that showed that he hadn't eaten in weeks. He hadn't grown much and yet he was still tall.

I knew that if my girl friends saw them, they would say that they were perfect. They both had crystal blue eyes, blond hair, and pale skin. They were tall and their features were the "perfect" size. I closed my eyes as I thought about what the girls would say about them.

(January 1939)

"Adeline, your brothers came to pick you up yesterday, right?" Bree asked me as we ate our lunches. I looked up from my sandwich as the girls watched me expectantly.

"Yes, they did. Why?" I asked and they all squealed.

"They are perfect! I am certain that Hitler would want to keep them for himself. They is exactly what is described to us," one of the other girls said. I shrugged.

"They are my brothers."

"That doesn't mean anything! You can't deny that they are the perfect ratio," Bree said and I shrugged.

It was different than how they treated Wilson.

(December 1943)

I held Wilson's hand as we walked to meet my friends. He smiled at me and I smiled back as he put his arm around my waist.

"Adeline, this must be Wilson," Bree said as she eyed Wilson like he was some sort of bug or roach that didn't belong with us.

"I am. It is a pleasure to meet you," Wilson said as he offered his hand but they all turned their noses up to the gesture. He sat down next to me and put his hand on my lap.

"It's good to see you all again," I said as Wilson played with my hand.

"It is good to see you again, Adeline," Bree said as she looked at Wilson distastefully.

"Addie has told me a lot about you ladies," Wilson said. They all turned up their noses instantly.

"How dare you call Adeline, Addie. She deserves more respect than that!" one of the girls exclaimed.

"I let him call me Addie. We are dating," I said and they stared at me. I felt Wilson squeeze my hand a little before I stood up. "I forgot that Wilson and I have somewhere to be. If you excuse us," I said as I pulled Wilson with me.

"Addie, what's wrong?" Wilson asked me as we walked into an alley.

"Why must they hate you? You live along side of us and all they can do is look at you like you are less than them," I said and he cupped my face as he kissed my forehead.

"Because they are scared of what they don't understand. At the school my parents sent me to, I have to deal with comments just because I'm Aryan like you," he said and I shook my head and looked away.

"You are a good person," I whispered and he lifted my chin.

"Which is something these close minded simpletons will never understand because they let biases exist in their hearts," he said and I hugged him.

"I love you," I told him and he held me close to him.

(May 1945)

"Adeline, we have to go now if we want to make it before they charge through again," Alaric said, breaking me from my thoughts.

"Lead the way Alaric," I said as the boys looked at me. He nodded and headed out the door.
