Alia Zimmerman
(April 1945)
Wilson carried Tessa and I rubbed my stomach as we were escorted across the base to a car in America. I looked out the window as the car started and sighed.
"Where are we?" I asked in English to Eric. He turned around from the front seat and looked at Wilson and me.
"Chicago, Illinois. It was the safest city for you and your families," Eric said, "It has a large German population."
"Why Chicago?" Wilson asked. I gave him a look and Wilson sighed. "I just mean that out of every city that you could but us in, you pick Chicago. Why?"
"Chicago is one of the most German populated city in the nation," Eric said. I looked at Wilson.
"Why do we have to be around Germans? Why not somewhere that is warmer or less German?" Wilson asked as the driver turned the corner.
"Americans are not exactly very welcoming to Germans right now. You could move from Chicago but I would advise against move from Chicago for your sake," Eric said and I looked at Tessa who glanced at me.
"If it means our families are safe, Wilson, then we will live in Chicago," I said and he looked at Tessa. I smiled and he leaned against the back of the seats.
"I was hoping to raise Tessa in Wisconsin in the town I was raised. Addie and I both agree on it," he said and I sighed.
"You two might be able to pull it off but you know that we can't go if what Eric says is true," I told him and he nodded.
"Adeline might not leave her brothers. They haven't been together for five years and I highly doubt that she will leave the two of them now," he said and I nodded as we sat in silence.
(May 1945)
I paced anxiously in the house as I waited for Alaric to come to me in the house from whatever hell he was in. The door opened and I looked to see Alaric walk into the house with a suit on. I ran to him and he hugged me before swinging me around. I squealed and I kissed him, harshly. I laughed as he put me down.
"Alia," he whispered and touched my stomach. "It's been so long." He put down a bag and I touched his face.
"I have missed you so much, Alaric," I said as Adalwolf walked in. I looked at him and he smiled at me. I walked to him and gave him a hug.
"Hello Alia," he said and I kissed his cheek.
"Stop being so formal. We are family now, Adal," I told him and he nodded as Jack walked out.
"Jack," he said as he walked passed Alaric and me to Jack. Jack hugged him and Alaric put his hands on my shoulders.
"Adeline told me about Jack. What do you think of that selection?" Alaric whispered as Adalwolf started telling Jack something quietly.
"I think Jack is a nice guy and he seems to really care about Adal," I told him and Alaric walked towards Jack. I stepped closer and watched as Alaric shook hands with Jack, who seemed clearly frightened of Alaric. Wilson walked in and almost turned out as Adeline walked. I chuckled and Alaric looked at me then Wilson.
"Hello," Wilson said. Alaric nodded and smiled a tight smile as Adalwolf walked to Adeline.
"Must he scare them?" Adalwolf asked his sister and I laughed a little.
"He cares about you two and he just wants to make sure that you two don't get hurt by them," I said as I turned around.
"Then technically can't we say the same thing to you?" Adeline asked and I chuckled as we looked over at Alaric, Wilson and Jack. Alaric easily towered over the two others and Jack looked anxious and all over the place.
"I guess you could but I am not leaving Alaric anytime soon," I told them and they nodded. "Alaric," I called. He looked over and I pointed to his bag. "What could you possible bring from Germany?" He walked over and picked up the bag.
"Family photos and uh... my uniform," he said. I stared at him. Family photos I understood but his uniform?
"Why?" I asked as everyone looked at the bag. He took a deep breath.
"I understand that there is three spies for America and two of you were held in a death camp by soldiers but that uniform is part of me just like what is part of you. I have friends that I have lost and people that I've killed. I am a soldier now and that uniform is important to me," Alaric muttered as he walked to the couch. We all exchanged a look. We never thought of the fact that Jack and Adalwolf wanted out and Adeline, Wilson, and I were secluded from the rest of Germany society because we wanted to, but Alaric's hand was forced to come with us without really accepting the fact. He was fighting for Germany. Even if he didn't agree with Germany, he might not have wanted to leave Germany.
"Alaric..." I tried to think of something to say.
"I think you look dashing in the uniform. Mother and Father use to keep a picture of you in your uniform on the mantle when you were home," Adeline said. Alaric looked at her and smiled.
"I know that," Alaric said. I looked over to the shelf where I had the picture they were talking about. Their parents gave me the photo as a wedding gift and I put it up on the mantle.
"I didn't see the picture though," Adalwolf said and all the Zimmerman siblings all got the same thinking look. I walked to the shelf.
"Your parents gave it to me," I said as I picked up the picture. I looked at the Zimmerman siblings who were all looking out the window. I looked at Jack and Wilson, who both looked as confused as I felt. "What's wrong?"
"The weather."
"What about it?" Jack asked as he itched his nose. Adeline smiled.
"It's ice cream weather," Adeline whispered.
