"I'm home!" My sister called as she walked in the door.
I was still sitting in my room thinking about Hayes, while doing this I was absently reading my summer reading book. I couldn't believe how fast I had fallen for him. No matter how much I liked him I could never let him know that. I was determined not to be THAT GIRL. Not the girl that is obsessed with Hayes. He will have enough of that at school. I was going to be his friend that was always there.
"Myra?" Ali stood outside my door. She was wearing her work uniform, a tee shirt with the logo of the ice cream shop she worked at for the summer, and simple jeans. "Have you met the new neighbors yet?"
"Yes. Well, sort of. I met the two boys, Nash and Hayes."
"Oh." She said. Her voice trailed off as she said that. "I was thinking we could bring them some cookies or something, to welcome them to the neighborhood."
"Sure." I said distantly.
She left and I went back to 'reading' my book.
After an hour of sitting and pretending to read it got out of my bed and walked down the stairs into my living room.
Ali was sitting on the couch texting someone. I could smell the cookies she was baking. Probably something crazy like pecan crunch or sesame sea caramel. She had a habit of making things more extravagant
"What type of cookies are you baking now?" I questioned sarcastically.
"Walnut, white chocolate chip." She said without even looking up from her phone.
As if on cue the timer buzzed for the cookies.
"I'll get them!" I said rushing to the oven. Pulling them out, they looked delicious. I took a spatula and scraped them off one by one onto the plate.
"I was going to take these over. Do you want to come?"
"Sure." Ali replied putting down her phone.
We walked out of our front door and headed to next door.
As we got there I started to worry if my hair looked okay. Well, it never looks great but it can look OK. Ali rang the doorbell and it opened almost instantly.
Hayes and Nash opened the door, with grins going from ear to ear. I smiled at Hayes then noticed the Ali was just staring.
I elbowed her. "Hi guys this is my sister." I pointed at Ali “she made cookies to welcome you to the neighborhood."
I handed the cookies to Hayes. He gave me a smile. Then a small girl with blond hair bounded down the hallway.
"COOKIES!" She exclaimed and grabbed one from off the plate.
Hayes laughed. "So, I think you made a good impression on Sky." He said between laughs.
"There walnut, white chocolate chip." I said over a giggle. I looked back at Ali who was still staring at Nash. Then I looked at Nash who was flashing his pearl white teeth at her. Looking back at Hayed we both started laughing uncontrollably.
"This is Ali." I said to both of them.
Nash stuck out his hand to Ali without breaking her gaze.
"Ali." She practically whispered while shaking his hand.
I snapped my fingers I front of her face. She woke from her trance and smiled.
She looked at me. “We have to go back and make dinner. It was nice meeting you Nash." When she said this Hayes gave her a look that was priceless. Like , 'I was there too!' I laughed and Ali looked at me with a weird look. This only made me laugh harder.
Just as we shut the front door to my house Ali started gushing.
"OMG! NASH IS SO CUTE!" I sigh getting ready for a huge speech about how cute Nash was. I loved Ali but she tended to fall in love very fast. "His eyes are so blue. And that smile, I could just melt into it. I felt a spark when we shook hands, do you think he liked me? I wonder if he felt the same spark I did? That would be really awkward if I thought we had a connection and he felt nothing -"
She continued gushing about how cute she was, but I didn't listen. I was reading. But actually reading this time not fake reading, and thinking about Hayes, but real thinking.
*Two weeks later*
Within two weeks my feelings for Hayes stopped. Mostly. And replacing those feelings was friendship. Whereas feelings between Nash and Ali grew. Whenever Ali and I would go over to the Griers to swim in their pool or play video games (which I was not very good at) they would always end up 'talking' up in Nash's room. And Hayes and I would be left alone.
"Do you have a crush on Hayes?" Ali asked me one day, when we were sitting on the couch.
I had been practicing not blushing for this very moment. "No. We're just friends." I said nonchalantly.
"Oh." She responded, with a slight bit of doubt.
"I don't like Hayes!" I shouted.
"Well, I'm a little disappointed." Hayes said from behind us.
"Hey, Hayes. Who let you in?" I said.
"Your doors unlocked." He came down and sat next to me on the couch.
"So." I said putting my phone down. "What are you doing?"
"Well." he started. "I realized that we have to read a summer book, and I don't know what it is."
"It's a shame you don't have a friend that happens to have the book." I said raising an eyebrow.
"It is a shame." He said as I said this I threw the book at him lightly. I had finished it in my process of getting rid of my feelings for Hayes.
"Animal Farm." He said "Isn't this book, like, really depressing."
"It's actually pretty good. It explains middle school perfectly. The populars that run the school, the brutes, that are the popular minions, the nerds, and the rebels working for a lost cause. Speaking of middle school what are you planning on doing for school."
"Well. I'm going to try out for football, and just become overall the most popular guy in school."
"Haha." I said.
"So. Are there any people I should look out for?"
I thought. "Well you’ll probably be with the popular guys, who although funny, can be douche bags, and the popular guys hang out with the popular girls. They are backstabbing bitches. You think their your friend then, they ignore you."
" So what group are you in?' He questioned.
"Well, I’m in the other group of popular girls. But we’re not as popular. Most of us play sports, and don’t get in trouble."
He nodded. "Is there anything else I should know?"
"Keep your grades over a B. It’s not cool to get bad grades at Riverview."
"Okay. You want to play some video games?"
I sighed giving into his offer. Although I wasn’t good at video games, Hayes was attempting to teach me. Usually I just ended up watching him playing. He set up the council and started to play. I sat on the other end of the couch and read. He had given up on me playing. Ali was still sitting on the chair across from us, giving me a weird look. WE were still just friends the feelings were gone. Nothing more to worry about.
