I woke up to a bright white room. It smelled clean, too clean. The thin sheet covering my body was itchy, and didn’t do anything to keep me warm. Looking around the room, there was a simply chair, and a little cup of water next to me. The room was very quiet; no one walked around outside, and no one was in the room except me. My leg was stiff, with a huge cast covering it, the cast started from the knuckles on my toes to my upper thigh.
"Well, I guess soccer is out of the question this season." I muttered to myself.
"What?" Said the pacing by nurse.
"Nothing, where is my family?" I asked.
"They probably went to go get some food." She smiled sweetly.
I waited for them to get back. Fiddling with my cast, looking at pictures on Instagram.
"Oh, my, gosh, you're awake!" I heard my sister cry as she entered the room.
"How long was I out for?"
"Just over night." My dad said giving me a hug.
"Okay, so when do I get to go home?"
"Well, they want to make sure everything is working, and if that goes well, you'll be out by this afternoon." He replies, taking a sip of his coffee
"Ok how long will the cast be on?" I asked.
They shifted uncomfortably giving each other nervous looks. "First, you have to have this current cast for about three months, then an air cast, as well as lots of P.T. to strengthen your muscles."
I sighed, no lacrosse this year. I looked down at the cast. It was bright pink. Ali must have had a part in picking the color. Damn thing, it was ruining my year.
"Hello Myra!" the doctor walked in and I realized I never got to know his name, odd. "So today I just have to check your cast and teach you how to use the crutches, then you can go home."
I smiled at him, and swung my leg and cast to the side if the bed. It was so heavy, weighing me down.
"So you have a small fracture here," he said pointing to my mid-thigh, through the cast, “and obviously the problem area, your shin. You were very lucky it didn't puncture the skin, so we'll see you every two weeks, and when your fracture is heeled we can cut your cast down to your knee. Then when you’re almost done with healing we'll give you a boot. The whole process will take about sixteen weeks to heal, with plenty of rest, then you'll be good."
I sighed that was a long time to not do anything. The nurses came in as the doctor went out.
"Hello!" they both said. "So we're just going to show you how to use your crutches and then you can go home!"
I took the crutches and attempted to stand up. It wasn't pretty; I fell into the first nurse and practically knocked her over.
"I'm sorry!" I exclaimed as I stood up.
It took a while to get used to walking, but I got the hang of it. The large cast was awkward, and I felt like I was going to hit everything within a three foot radius while walking to the truck.
I carefully stepped in and put my crutches to my side. I opened my phone and took a picture of my cast, and then sent it to the soccer team. Putting my phone down I looked out the window, and watched the world pass by. My eyelids became heavy and I drifted to sleep.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
My dad gave me a little shake to wake me up in the back seat. I opened my eyes and saw my house outside the car, I must have slept the whole way home. I slowly got out of the car, placing my foot on the ground with my crutches. I got up and walked to the front door I walked in and sighed. Then my dog ran over to me rather excitedly, it was like he hadn’t seen me in months, not hours. I patted him on the head and turned to my sister and dad.
"I'm really tired; I'm going to my room to sleep." I told my sister and dad, who were seated on the couch watching TV.
Walking over to the stairs I looked at them and puffed out my cheeks, this was going to be difficult. I put my good foot on the first stair and then dragged my cast up with me. The whole process toke about ten minutes, and by the end I was annoyed at how much effort it toke to walk up twenty stairs.
I opened the door to my bed room, and sprawled across my bed. I plugged in my ear buds, and drifted into a thoughtless trance.
My thoughts were stopped by a rustling in my window. Looking up I saw Hayes climbing in, with a bag.
"I don’t think you know how to use a door." I said.
He gave me an indescribable look, and turned his attention to the bag. "I brought all your favorite foods," He pulled sodas, chips, and candies out of the bag, and then sat next to me on the bed.
I looked at him and pulled him into a hug, he always smelled so good. I pulled out a sharpie and handed it to him. He looked like a little kid that you just gave candy to. He moved down to my calf and started to scribble. When he was done I had HAYES written from my knee to my ankle. I gave him a 'really' look, and he gave me a devious smile.
"Let's watch a movie!" He said pulling a movie out of his bag. Then he put it into my laptop and pressed play. I leaned against the head board and opened a soda. Hayes did the same as the movie began. The Conjuring, of course Hayes would want to watch this. Within a half an hour I was hiding my face in the crock of his neck.
I heard the door open, CRAP. It was my dad. I would kick myself if I could, but unfortunately, my legs were intertwined with Hayes'. My father walked in and glared at Hayes, but instead of yelling, he simply took a pillow and placed it in between us, then gave Hayes on last glare, and left. It was kind of awkward the rest of the time. Hayes moved away a little and I just pulled him into another hug.
When the movie was over, and I jumped at every sound in my small room, Hayes had to go home. He picked up his stuff and started to walk to my window, then stopped.
"Hey Myra?" he said
"Yeah?"
"The older boys on the football team have this stupid thing that they want the younger boys to do."
I laughed hazing was a tradition with the football team. "What is it?"
"Well they want us to have girls wear our away uniforms on the day of our first game, then come and watch the game, so I was wondering if you wanted to wear my jersey?"
"What about Olivia, it wouldn't look good if your girlfriend’s enemy was wearing your jersey?"
"She has to wear her cheer uniform, so is that a yes?" The jersey was hanging from his finger
"Fine." I said, he grinned and threw the jersey at me. Catching it I looked down. This was like him asking me to be his girlfriend, I like being a secret, it was just us hanging out. Then I thought about the other people, what they would think. Oh, god Monday was going to be a beast.
I lay down on my bed and closed my eyes, drifting into a dreamless sleep.
