Leah gripped the straps of her backpack as she walked home from school with her friend, Stan Uris. They had been friends for almost a year, walking to and from Derry High School since they met. They never really saw each other during the week, considering their schedules were different and Stan was either busy or with his other friends, who Leah knew little about. "Tell me about your other friends?" Leah asked suddenly, causing Stan to give her a sideways look.
"What about them?" he questioned.
The girl shrugged, her long brown hair falling behind her shoulders. "I don't know," she admitted. "You never really talk too much about them, so I was only wondering." Her brown eyes flicked over and met his own.
"Well," Stan started, scrunching his face together. "First, there's Bill. He's got a stutter, and he's kind of our leader, you could say. We all look up to him. Then, there's Richie. He is the living embodiment of a pain in the butt. Eddie's the germ freak. He will flip out at anything remotely unclean, it's crazy. Then, there's me. We're sort of like a group. The Losers Club as Richie named us," Stan ended with a laugh.
Leah smiled at him. "They sound great," she answered. "But, no girls, huh?" she asked, nudging Stan with her elbow.
He shook his head, curly light brown hairs covering his forehead. "No," he responded. "No girl has ever wanted to just hang out with us all the time. I'm betting Richie always scares them off with his, uh, unique personality."
The girl pondered what he said, before grinning. "So," she stopped walking, making Stan do the same. "If some girl did want to join the quote, unquote, Losers Club, would she be able to?"
"Are you asking if you can join?" Stan asked, picking up on Leah's hints. She nodded, before looking down sheepishly. "Well, you'd have to be accepted by the others and not just me, but I'd like you to be in the club with us," he replied, making Leah blush bright red. "I was going to go meet them after I dropped you off at your house, but you can come along and ask, if you want."
Leah nodded vigorously. "Yeah, okay!" The two turned and began to walk in a different direction, heading towards the barrens. Leah had only been there a few times, mostly to be alone, but this time, there were butterflies in her stomach and her palms were sweating.
As soon as they arrived, Leah could tell she was going to like them. Richie was threatening to throw a pile of dirt at Eddie, who was spitting out cuss words left and right, while Bill rolled his eyes at the two as leaned against a tree. "Stan!" Bill called, pushing himself off the trunk and walking over to the two. He gave Leah a weird look, but didn't say anything.
Richie and Eddie had stopped tormenting each other, and joined their friend. "Who are you?" Richie's nose scrunched as he squinted at the girl behind his glasses.
"I'm Leah," she answered, shifting nervously as she stuffed her hands into the pockets of her shorts. "Nice to meet you."
Eddie eyed her carefully, like he was looking for any sign of a contagious disease upon her tan skin. When the shorter boy gave a nod to say she was clean, Richie elbowed him. "Why are you here?"
Stan was about to speak up, but Leah didn't let him. "I want to join the Losers Club." Bill's eyes flicked over to Stan, while Richie and Eddie's faces contorted. Leah tilted her head.
"What makes you think you can be in our group?" Eddie tried to make himself look taller than he actually was.
Leah raised an eyebrow. "Well, I don't know. I mean, I wasn't aware that there was an application form to fill out," she replied sarcastically, earning a soft chuckle from the Jewish boy beside her. She noticed the three boys sending Stan looks, so she nudged him. "Is there a problem?"
Stan was cut off once again, this time by Richie. "Actually, there is. You can't just join the Losers Club. You're not a loser or anything. There's nothing that makes you an outcast. No problems, no messed-up features. You're too average to be in our club," Richie scoffed at her.
Leah's shoulders dropped. Any excitement she had for this moment was shredded to pieces. "Well, I, um," she couldn't think of an answer. Richie crossed his arms and smirked triumphantly. He had won. Leah gave a quiet sigh and turned to leave.
"Wait a second!" Stan finally got to speak, and he grabbed Leah's arm. "You say she can't join because she's normal?" Richie nodded. "I know for certain that if you, if any of us, had the chance to be normal, we would take it." The boys looked down at the ground. "I think that her being normal makes it a better reason to let her in."
"What the fuck are you talking about Stan?" Richie challenged, trying to gain some sort of footing on the debate.
Stan stood his ground. "I'm saying that she is willing to call herself a loser, a weirdo, an outcast to be in our group. To be our friend. She is voluntarily degrading herself to our title to be a part of this with us. That is something I know none of you would do, because you'd rather be normal than be in the Losers Club."
Leah, who had turned back around, placed her hand on Stan's shoulder with a smile. He gave her a shrug and grin, while she mouthed a 'thank you' to him.
None of the boys had said anything yet, until Bill opened his mouth. "I th-think she should juh-join if she wants to," Bill glanced over at Leah and gave a smile, and she returned it.
"Me too," Eddie replied. "I mean, she's not sick, so I guess she's okay with me."
Everyone looked over to Richie, who was staring down at his shoes. He stomped his foot and groaned. "Fine! Fine, fine, fine, whatever! She can join. But I swear if she starts dragging in her dumbass popular friends, she's out," he caved. Leah shook her head at him before giving them all an award-winning smile.
The group was awkward at first after Stan's talk, but eventually Richie began to chase Eddie with a worm he found, and the atmosphere was comfortable. Leah and Stan still stood side by side as they watched everyone return to their normal selves. "Thank you," Leah said, turning to him. "Thank you so much Stan."
"You're welcome," Stan replied, pulling her into a hug. "Anything for you."
Eddie stopped running to stare at them before faking a gag. "Ew, oh my God, you guys are gonna catch an STD," he cried, a disgusted look on his face.
Richie rolled his eyes. "He could've told us he had a fucking girlfriend. How come he gets a chick before I can?" he whined.
"Be-be-because you're a duh-dickhead," Bill called from the shade of a tree, causing Stand and Leah to laugh while Richie flipped him off.
Stan rolled his eyes at the trash-mouthed boy. "And she's not my girlfriend," he answered before looking over to Leah with a smirk. "Not yet, anyways."
Leah blushed before smiling with a laugh. She leaned in a placed a quick peck on Stan's lips. Eddie tossed a bottle of hand sanitizer at them, before walking off and mumbling about how they were going to come down with gonorrhea and chlamydia. The two chuckled at his silliness, before sharing one more short but sweet kiss. Leah laid her head on his shoulder. Before you ask, they got together that very same day, and trust me, it was perfect.
Even though they had arguments with one another, Leah and the Losers Club made it work. Their new member brought them closer together as friends, and they never thought about being normal again. Why be normal when you can be a loser, anyways?
