Ella hummed to herself as she ran a brush through her black hair, a small smile on her face as she stared in the mirror. It was going to be a good day. She stood up, pushing her vanity chair under it, and stepped over to her closet, where she pushed hangers around, trying to find the perfect thing to wear.

"Ella!" someone shouted, and she rolled her eyes, knowing exactly who it was. Her twin brother, Richie, stormed into her room, without knocking as usual. Just because he was two minutes older, he seemed to believe he could bother her without notice.

The girl turned to him, "What do you want? I'm trying to get dressed," she motioned to the fluffy blue robe she had on.

Richie crossed his arms. "Why didn't you tell me!?"

"Tell you what?" Ella asked, picking out a white long-sleeved cropped top that always brought out her emerald eyes, making them seem brighter. She also grabbed a black high-waisted skirt, tossing both of them on the bed.

Richie scoffed at her. "You know what I'm talking about." Ella raised an eyebrow at him, before bending down to look at her shoes. "You're going on a date," he told her, "with Bill."

The girl laughed. "Oh, that, yeah. What's the problem?" She pinched her lips together before smiling as she picked up her converse.

"You can't go on a date with one of my best friends without telling me and expect me to be okay with it!" he answered, throwing his arms into the air.

Ella stood up straighter. "Richie, I swear. He's one of my best friends too, and I'm not a little girl. You don't always have to look after me," she replied, making his gaze fall. "Rich," she said quietly, "I'll be okay. Trust me," he didn't answer, so she added, "I promise if I start to feel even slightly uncomfortable, I'll leave. Tell him I'm not feeling good, or something. Okay?"

Richie nodded, and she shooed him out of the room. She changed into her clothes and applied some light makeup. By the time she finished, Bill knocked on the door, and she left with him to go to the movies. "You l-l-look g-great," he said, blushing slightly.

"Thanks, Bill," she answered, giving him a wide smile. The walk to the theater was about ten minutes, and when they arrived, Bill paid for the tickets and the snacks, despite Ella telling him not to. He only waved it off, saying it wasn't a big deal.

The movie they were going to see was some cheesy horror one, but they chose it for a laugh. "D-Don't get too sc-scared, Ella," Bill joked, making the girl roll her eyes.

"I'll try not to, but I don't know for sure. I might start crying," she replied, causing them both to laugh as they took their seats. They talked quietly until the previews started, but they didn't catch their five friends, creeping into the movie theater, just to spy on them. They sat directly behind them, Richie eyeing Bill and Ella. Nothing was going to happen to his little sister on his watch.

The movie started, and Bill and Ella watched intently, every once in a while whispering snarky comments about the film to make the other giggle. Halfway through, Bill put his arm around the girl, making her blush, but she leaned comfortably into it. This caused Richie to glare, though no one else could see.

Ella's hand brushed Bill's as they both reached into the bag of popcorn, making them both pull away and give shy smiles. The movie itself was moderate and it only caused Ella to jump once, only because Bill shifted in his seat the moment the jump scare happened, which the boy found amusing.

Bill looked over at the girl, whose eyes were fixated on the screen. The colors reflected in her eyes, making them look like a rainbow. Ella glanced at Bill for a second, then turned her head and met his eyes. She tilted her head, as if asking him why he was staring. Did she have something on her face?

No, instead, Bill leaned forward some, their faces inches apart. Just as Bill was about to close the distance between them, someone threw popcorn at them, getting it caught in Ella's hair. They both turned in their seats to see all of their friends staring at them.

Ella stared at them confused and kind of embarrassed, but her eyes narrowed when she saw her brother. He held a handful of popcorn, ready to throw more if needed. Her face heated up with anger and humiliation, since her brother had just ruined her date.

Bill and Ella both faced the screen again, no longer having any contact. They sat silently as the movie continued until the credits rolled. They stood up and left the room, their friends trailing behind. Once they got outside, Ella grabbed her brother's arm. "I can't believe you!"

"What?" Richie exclaimed. "I was trying to make sure you were okay. I wasn't gonna let anyone hurt my sister, not even Bill!"

"You don't care about anyone but yourself, Richie!" Ella cried, tears forming in her eyes. "You ruin everything! I'm not a little girl anymore! I can take care of myself! I told you if anything felt weird, I would leave! I was fine! I felt fine! You don't care! Just leave me alone and get out of my life!"

Ella ran away from the group, leaving Richie and Bill to both call her name. She ignored them, her hair flying behind her as she turned down a street. She wasn't going home. Richie would look there. She sprinted until her lungs burned and she couldn't run anymore. By this time, she was at the park, out of breath and face red.

She sat on a bench and covered her face. She let the tears fall from her eyes, washing away her makeup, but she didn't care. She didn't know how long she was there, but it must have been a while, because someone came and sat beside her. "Ella?" It was Bill.

She lifted her head, knowing that she must look like a mess. Bill gave her a smile. He didn't care how she looked. She was still beautiful, even with a tear-stained face and puffy green eyes. "Hey," she replied, quietly.

"D-Don't be m-m-mad at R-Richie, please," Bill told her, voice soft. "He d-didn't mean any h-harm. He j-j-just wants to pr-protect you. He's your b-b-brother," he said that last word so quietly. "D-Don't k-k-kick him out of your life." Ella sighed, and opened her mouth, but he cut her off. "D-Don't ap-apologize either." Ella laughed. "Even though the d-date was m-m-messy, will you b-be my g-g-girlfriend?" he asked shyly. The girl nodded, and Bill leaned forward, placing his lips on hers, and they both forgot what had happened in the cinema.
