We were staring at the lake. It was all incredibly beautiful. The birds chirping, how the sun reflected in the water's surface, the sunset.
"I didn't know about this talent of being a good planner as such." I said as I ate an apple.
"Yeah well I'm not." he chuckled slightly.
"You did a good job. I have to admit, you surprised me." I said back.
"You know what they say... Don't judge a book by it's cover." he said as if he was about to give me a lecture.
"That one's true." I said.
"Talking 'bout talents. Other than being a smartass, what other talents do you have?" He asked.
"Well I don't know if it's a talent but I know five languages." I chuckled.
"Really?" He asked. "Which ones?" He added.
"Yeah. I know English, obviously, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch." I said.
"Daammn you got skillsss." He said laughing. I laughed back.
Our conversation had faded. We were now in an awkward silence. It's all my fault. The way that I expressed that I needed space last night, was not the best. He just wanted to show me affection and I pushed him away.
"Hey Zack?" I said to Zack as he just stared at the beautiful view.
"Yeah?" he said looking at me.
"I'm sorry if I was to harsh last night. I know you want to show me affection and I pushed you away. I don't want you to think that I don't like you, because I do. I really do. I just need you to take it slow." I said trying not to make him feel so bad.
"It's okay Zo, I understand. I know what you meant last night and I didn't take it the wrong way. I know things with your past relationship didn't go so well." he said calmly.
"Thank you for understanding." I said smiling gently.
"Of course." he smiled back. "How about we start getting to know each other?" he asked changing the subject.
"Okay." I said. "Shoot!".
"Where should I start?" he said while thinking. "Okay. Where did you grow up?" he asked.
"Well my parents are from Puerto Rico but I was born here in Jacksonville. How about you?" I asked.
"I was born California, but we moved here when I was 8." he said ignoring the part about his mom.
"I've always wanted to go California. It looks so perfect. The beach, the streets, the people." I said smiling at my thoughts.
"Yeah, I still remember it." he said smiling softly. "Maybe I'll take you there someday." he said smiling at me widely before I laid my head on his shoulder.
"Yeah, someday." I said smiling. "Do you still talk with your friends from California?" I asked looking at him.
"Yeah, with my closest friends. We even met up last summer. I went to California and stayed with them the whole summer. You would love them, specially Erick." he said chuckling. "I wish you could meet them." he said.
"Don't worry, I'll meet them someday." I said smiling.
"Yeah" he nodded. "What are you planning on doing when you graduate?" he asked.
"Well as I told you, I want to study medicine and become a trauma and plastic surgeon, like my mom." I answered.
"Big aspirations, that's one of the things I like about you. It's pretty interesting, you know, saving people's lives and everything." he paused. "Where are you planning to go?" he asked.
"One of my dream universities is John Hopkins, it's in Baltimore. It's ranked number three in the best medical schools in the country but I'm not getting my hopes up. They only accept the best students in the country." I said frowning a bit.
"Zoe, you're brilliant, you're going to get in, I'm sure." he said taking my hand in his.
"How do you know I'm brilliant? You haven't even seen my grades." I said laughing.
"Zo, you literally know everything about everything. Yesterday we were eating lunch and Marc said he wished he could know how chocolate is made. You explained the whole fucking process." he said laughing. I laughed too.
"Wait... What's the other dream university?" he asked.
"It's actually the University of California." I chuckled.
"Oh.. So that's why you love California so much." he said.
"Well, that's part of it. Yeah." I replied. "I really like the Univeristy of California though. I've seen the campus and it looks comfortable, like home. I really want to get in." I finished.
"You will and when you do, maybe you'll get to meet Erick and the rest of the guys." he said smiling.
"That would be nice." I said smiling back. "What about you? What are you planning on doing once you graduate?" I asked.
"Well, I would like to sign in the Air Force because since little I've always loved planes but I would also like to be an architect since I like to design stuff and all that." he said.
"That's nice. You have the architect look" I said chuckling.
"Is that even a thing?" he asked laughing.
"It is to me." I said with a sassy tone while I tried to hold back my laughter.
"You'll get there. I'm sure." I said smiling.
"I know you'll make it too. You are capable of doing whatever you want and still do it perfectly." he said before kissing my cheek.
"You think so?"
"I know so." he replied with a joyful smile on his face.
"You would make a great father someday in the future." I thought out loud. He looked at me with wide eyes.
"I-I mean I'm not saying I'll be the mother but like, you know, hypothetically talking. I'm not thinking about kids. We haven't even been together for a month. Plus, we're going to be seniors now and all that. I don't even know why I said that, uh I mean... I'll just shut up." I said quickly. He just laughed.
"Geez Zoe, chill. I know what you meant." he said laughing uncontrollably. "You would make a very good mother too. You're smart, funny, cool, fun, you do everything right..." he said after he calmed down.
"I'm not sure if I want to have kids but if one day I have one, and I'm stuck in a parenthood crisis, I'll remember that." I smiled softly. He smiled back. Our conversation made me think how close I was to finishing school. How I was soon going to start making decisions regarding my future and how each one of them would affect my future. I would soon be a senior, then a freshman all over again. Once I finish school, I'll be a different person, live a different life, meet new people, create more friendships... build my new life right from scratch.
