"Hello?" His voice comes through the line, slightly confused but also interested, his accent clear, even through the phone.

"Uh-hi," I respond awkwardly, unsure of what to say, Tara giving me a reassuring smile. I twirl the phone cord around my finger, letting it curl up then unravel.

"Sorry, who is this?"

"Uh- the girl from the coffee shop, the one with the other lady and boy," I explain, hoping he remembers me.

"Oh! Uh-hi," he responds meekly, the two of us awkwardly not knowing what to say. "What's your name?"

"Jade, and your's is Nathan?"

"Yeah."

"I really like how you wear your badge upside down," I comment, an awkward laugh coming from both of us.

"Oh, thanks."

Tara hits me on the shoulder, making me look at her, and she passes me a little note.

'Ask him to meet up, it'll be better than this.'

"So uh-"

"Do you-"

We both speak at the same time and abruptly stop.

"You go first," I tell him.

"No no, you go, it's fine."

"You go, I can wait."

"Okay, uh-I was wondering if you wanted to meet up with me? Maybe go do something?" he asks hopefully. My magic jumps around excitedly, stirring the butterflies in my stomach into a mad craze.

"Yeah- that's what I was going to say," I laugh. "I would love to."

"Sweet. Uhm, where do you want to meet?"

"What about at that coffee shop? The one where you work?"

"Sounds good. See you there tomorrow, noon?"

"Yeah, I'll see you then."

I hang up the phone, setting it back in place on the bedside table. "So?" Tara asks, raising an eyebrow.

"We're meeting up tomorrow, at noon."

"Oooooh! Exciting!" she responds, clapping her hands.

"It's not that big of a deal," I mutter. She scowls at me, crossing her arms over her chest.

"It is a big deal, he's your soulmate! Your magic knows that, I know you can feel that, damn, I felt it when I met Karn and I don't even have magic, I can't imagine how strong is must be for you."

"Yeah, I guess we'll just see how it plays out."

"How what plays out?" A voice asks from the doorway, my heart skipping a beat as I whip around, spotting Steve leaning against the doorway.

"Did you hear any of what we were just talking about?" I asked, slightly panicked.

"Maybe some things about you having a soulmate, how it's a big deal, nothing major," he replies sarcastically. My blood runs cold as he smirks at me, walking over and sitting beside me on the bed. "So, want to explain? Because I could go and tell Brine, we all know how he'd react-"

"No!" I blurt out. "Don't tell Dad. He'll flip his shit if he finds out."

"Well girly, better fill me in then, see if I can't help keep this secret," he says, winking at me. Tara chuckles beside me and I sigh, rolling my eyes.

I proceed to fill him in, telling him everything, and he just sits back, listening as his knowing eyes flicker over me. "Well, that is rather interesting. I remember when Notch found Kathryn, he was head over heels for her, it was crazy. I'll keep your secret, Brine would flip his shit. But..."
