It's been a few days. He still hasn't woken up. Karn says there's a chance he could but we shouldn't get our hopes up, it's still very possible he could die. Or that he just won't wake up.Tara and Gaby had to got to a village and get some medical supplies for Dad and Liam, oxygen masks that filter the air to make it more purified, different types of fluids, and needles. So many needles.
Steve has the 'universal blood', which is the one they can give to anyone. I think it's O-negative. I'm also a match to Dad, but Karn is worried about how much blood he's taking from me. Sure, we could just kill Steve, he would come back, but dying through lack of blood is a very painful way for him to die as it means in the respawning process he has to make more blood, and he says it could take up to a month to come back if we completely drained him dry. Also, according to Karn, it isn't good for a magical person to be given one type of blood with a different magic to their own, screws everything up. And, Dad would have our necks if we let Steve do that.
So that's off the table.
We've been able to keep him at a stable condition, mostly. He's had a few scares where he stops breathing for a second too long, so Karn went and found this weird thing from some crazy old witch out in a swamp that detects a person's magic. If the magic starts dropping, usually it means the heart has stopped.
So we now have that thing hooked up to Dad too.
And Liam? He's getting better slowly. Either Cole or I have been at his side, gradually healing him, slowly, so his body feels like it's doing it instead of us. We'll sit by his bedside for about an hour as our magic works, chatting to Gaby, or Tara. They're the ones in there the most.
And Steve, he's been better.
Helping with Dad has definitely helped as he doesn't feel so useless, he feels like he's done something good for his brother. He insists that we take as much blood as Dad needs from him, but Karn refuses to take too much, saying it could have the reverse effects on Dad and weaken his magic. Which is why I'm also offering my blood. My magic is a lot closer to Dad's, and Karn says that it could be better for him as it's also a combination of Sana's too, his mate.
His hand still feels so cold in mine, even as I squeeze the little gel ball thing in my other hand. A tube runs from out of my arm up into a blood bag of some sort, the needle of it sitting in the crease of my elbow. Still hate needles, that hasn't changed. Nate sits beside me in a different chair, my head resting on his shoulder, his leg propped up on the bed that Dad lies on. He holds 'Demon Road' by Derek Landy, in front of me, my eyes soaking up the story of Amber and her demons for parents. Literal demons.
I nod against him and he turns the page, allowing the two of us to continue reading. But I feel something, a squeeze, and my head whips up, looking at Dad as I look at his hand that is tightly holding onto mine. "Dad?" I whisper. His hand goes limp again and Nathan looks at me, a sadness mixed with sympathy flowing from him.
"It's a reflex, it happens for people in comas. They randomly squeeze and slightly move, it's probably nothing," he tells me gently.
"Dad, if you can hear me, squeeze my hand again," I say, trying to prove Nate wrong.
But nothing happens.
I sigh and Nathan meets my eyes. "He'll come around, but it's too early to tell anything."
"And you know all of this because...?" I ask him curiously.
"I was a med student, was studying how to be a doctor. But, they were using me as a test dummy to the class to show how to do readings on someone, and almost discovered my magic. They picked me randomly for it, I was already freaking out. Normal villagers don't react well to knowing someone has magic. It's only meant for the batshit crazy witches in the swamps, and the three brothers. Not for normal people like me. I had to leave the school, they were getting suspicious after I ran out of the class that day."
