I woke up this morning to the sound of screaming. I lept out of bed and ran down the hall...it was Em. Dad had just walked through the door for the first time since we moved here and she was clearly excited. Me...not so much. As I saw everything was OK, I went back upstairs to change for school. Mum was just getting up too and heading for the bathroom. When she heard me she stopped and turned around, "Happy birthday sweetie! How are you feeling this morning?" Oh yeah, it's my birthday today. "Thanks mum, I'm good. I see Dad's home then."
"Good to hear. Yes, he's going away again tonight. Shame, why can't he just stay for your birthday?" A tear slid down from her eye as I embraced her in a hug. "Mum, I don't care. You know I'd prefer it if he wasn't here at all." Mum smiled and slid into the bathroom. Best start to my birthday ever...not!
I didn't even bother to say hi to him before I was out of the door and walking to school. It takes around half an hour so I had enough time to think. After around 5 minuites, my phone started ringing. I scrambled around in my pocket to try and find it and saw it was Aimee so I answered, "Hello?"
"Happy birthday Katie!!"
"Aha thanks girl, it couldn't have waited till we were in school?" I laughed down the phone.
"Er NO! Haha, anyway the real reason I'm calling you is to tell you Ross is going to hang out with us today. He said he wants to get to know you all better."
"Oh ok."
Aimee went silent for a moment then coughed slightly.
"Soo, how are you and...Amber?"
"Honestly, I don't know. I thought Dan was the bad guy in all of this, but it turns out it was her."
"Have you actually given her a chance to explain? She's a pretty bad liar and hates upsetting people."
"No and that's nice. Why does she do it then?"
"She doesn't mean too. Listen I've got to go. See you later."
"See you."
And then I hung up. This seriously has got to be the worst birthday I've ever had or even witnessed. As I walked through the school gates I was greeted by Aimee, Mia and Grace. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Amber standing at a distance. "You're sacrificing your friendship with her Katie and you know it!" I looked Mia in the eye to see if she was bluffing. She wasn't. "Just hear her out please, we all have." Great, now I'm the bad guy. "Well on a happier note...quite literally. Happy birthday, here's your present."
"Thanks girls." I opened up the bag to see they must have all chiped in. It was a beautiful rose gold necklace with a heart pendant. It was the most glamorous piece of jewellery I had ever seen. "Omg it's beautifu!! Thank you so much."
I pulled them all into a hug and we just stood there until Grace, being the excited thing that she is. Made me feel a bit uncomfortable "Amber helped pay too. We are all going to the field at lunch...including Rhys, James and Ross. We invited Dan but he said he doesn't know if he'll come. Atoms are invading our personal space!" Never mind. I burst out laughing. God I love Grace. "Oh and dragons are going to fly down from the past to greet you."
Dragons...really? She comes up with the strangest of things.
