The more and more you hacked away at the stone wall, the farther and farther you seemed to be getting away from seeing Newt again. Every instinct you had was telling you to go back to the control room right now and stay there. But you couldn't just leave everyone else for dead. You promised yourself no one would die. Gabi was an exception.
The wall gave way every time something hit it, but it wasn't enough. You couldn't wait long to get back to Newt. You honestly considered Gabi's suggestion but everything told you not to go. Something was waiting for you. And you weren't about to go straight to it. Instead you worked harder on the task at hand.
Gabi worked diligently, crushing the top of the crack as you tried to break away pieces from the bottom. Teresa was sitting on the side, taking a break because her side had started to hurt worse.
The crack got wider, thankfully, by the minute. You could now truthfully call it a hole. Not a crack in the wall, but a hole in the wall. Which gave you hope. What a desperate situation you must be in to be getting hope from a hole in the wall.
Teresa had wondered over to the same vent you went through before. She tucked her hair behind her ear and squatted down gingerly to look in. A slight draft was constantly making its way into the room, but it smelt foul. The smell hadn't bothered any of you very much, since you weren't paying much attention to it. Now a small breathless squeaking sound was coming from inside.
Teresa tapped the top panel of the vent with her knuckle. Only thing the changed was a cloud of dust billowing down and out of the vent into her face. She coughed and sputtered, then sneezed. "Gross." She muttered.
"Gross, indeed." Gabi repeated. "Now if your rested enough, come help us."
Teresa moved to help but doubled back when something caught hold of her foot. As soon as the thing wrapped around her ankle, she turned, but was already on her stomach on the floor. She let out a ear-piercing scream that the guys must have heard halfway across the Glade.
She was halfway through the opening when you and Gabi got hold of her. You and Gabi pulled her as hard as you can, gritting your teeth and letting out cries of effort. Teresa tried pulling on your arms to help. Right when you thought Teresa's arms would rip off, whatever had her let go and you and Gabi flew backwards with Teresa on top of you.
"What the hell was that?" You yelled, seriously frustrated and scared.
"How am I supposed to know?" Gabi asked you.
"It was a rhetorical question." You stated, sitting up as Teresa moved off of the two of you. She was in pain and it was obvious but nothing could help her at the moment.
The metal in the vent popped under somethings weight. You were on your feet in half a second, armed with whatever was closest; a knife. The metal continued to groan and make a shuffling noise. Whatever it was' eyes seemed to glow in the dim light let in in the vents. As soon as your brain processed the red skinned, purple veined, slimy arm setting itself on the floor lightly and leading whatever it was' head out, you swung. The knife left your grip and connected with a sickening, wet thunk. The arm went limp, falling at an unnatural angle and didn't move again. Whatever the arm was connected to also went limp and caused a loud noise when it fell.
You stalked over carefully. Sticking a hand in the vent, you grabbed the hilt of the knife you threw and pulled it out. The noise it made was like taking a suction cup off a wet surface. Something dripped on your hand and you dropped the thing so quickly it almost went back into the hole you made in the things head. The knife was covered in blood, which wasn't surprising. It continued dripping all the while you pulled it out. Next thing you know the knife is on the floor in front of you, covered in a mixture of red slime and dark blood.
"That's vile." Gabi voiced your thoughts.
"Who's there?" A familiar voice yelled from the other side of the hole in the wall.
You, Teresa, and Gabi started then shared a sigh of relief before rushing over to the hole and relieving the guys more.
"Thomas!" Teresa yelled when your faces appeared.
"Oh, my god! Guys!" Thomas dropped the sharpened stick in his hands and called the others over. He put a hand on the wall and leaned down enough to be eye level with the three of you. "What happened? Are you okay?"
"What's going on?" Alby asked, jogging over with the rest of the group following him.
"The girls."
"Hey, guys." You greeted with a nonchalant wave.
The group rushed forwards with questions. "Are you hurt?" "Did something happen?" "Why can't we communicate with our minds?" "Did you leave the bitch behind?"
"Yeah, fuck you twice, too, asshole." Gabi stated when she heard that comment.
Ignoring Gabi and Gally's glaring you got back to the situation at hand. "We can't get out of here. The door's blocked and we can risk going all the way around just to find any of the other doors Gabi had mentioned blocked, too."
"Plus a Crank almost killed Teresa just now." Gabi crossed her arms.
"What?" Thomas asked, more angry then confused.
"And Little Miss Bitchy over here almost got killed as well on our way there."
"Yeah, and you're about 2 seconds from my fist smashing your nose." You shot back at her. Gabi only smiled.
"Can I get front row tickets?" Minho asked.
"How are we going to get you out of there then?" Newt asked, the only one with sense in the situation at the moment.
"We've been breaking the wall here for a while now. It's worked pretty well so far, considering we can see through it now." You explained. You patted the crack and a small chuck fell out.
"You could probably fit through this." Alby inspected the crack.
"And how would you know that, if you weren't looking?" You questioned, earning a look from Alby. "Hey, you walked right into that one."
"I don't really want to risk it." Teresa said.
You had forgotten Teresa's side when the guys showed up. Now you felt terrible for forgetting.
"You'll fit. You'll be fine." Thomas insisted.
"No, it's not that." Teresa admitted. "The Griever back there did a good job of slamming me into a wall. I hurt my side."
"How bad?"
"Not bad. Doesn't feel broken."
"We can't be sure though." You said. "You can barely move your upper body."
"Well, it'll have to work." Gabi ended. "We can at least make sure she's the first one out so whoever the doctor dude is can help her."
"Jeff." Jeff informed.
"John." Gabi didn't care.
A low rumble came from the vents again, like the sounds of distant running. You turned to look and knew exactly what was happening. "Teresa, hurry up."
"But-" Teresa tried to argue but you cut her off.
"Teresa, would you rather die or be in a lot of pain temporarily?"
Teresa looked at you for a second, her expression turned sour but she pushed her lower body through the crack and out the other side.
Gabi looked at you as the rumbling grew louder. "See you on the other side then, ass."
"Don't be so dramatic, it's just a wall." You replied.
A screech was heard from the vents when Gabi was through, after the bag of weapons, of course. You set yourself up and pushed your lower body through. Hands grabbed your feet and legs to help. The stone scratched your abdomen as you wriggled your way through. Before you were completely out, you saw the shadows of a crowd of Cranks pushing their way through the doors and a head thrust it's way into the room through the vents in a cloud of appendages.
