A puff of hot steam hit you in the face before the snout of the dog did. It rammed right into your cheek making you fall flat on your back once again. Your cheek stung and burned.
Your arms came up to protect your face as the dog opened its maw to bite you but the contact was never made. With a loud crash the robot was sent flying with one of its companions. They landed in a scrambling pile not far from you.
You only had a chance to glance at the destruction around you before you were being pulled to your feet. Newt stood in front of you already inspecting you for injuries. He ran a thumb over your cheek. His hand came away with traces of blood but you didn't have time to think on it.
He turned and ran, his hand still around your wrist. Your eyes went back to the scene behind you. Minho kicked a robot away and ran in the opposite direction, kicking another dog off Jeff and helping him up in the process. Thomas was behind you running with Teresa and Gabi. Chuck was with Frypan, hitting the mechanical k-9's out of the way with a machete. Alby still had River clinging to his back. He shot down any robots in his way with one of the electrical ammo guns. Winston jogged along behind him, playing defense from back attacks, but you had the feeling he just wanted protection. Gally was up ahead of you shouting many different things you couldn't decipher but understood his meaning by the urgency and anger in his voice.
Newt unknowingly kicked sand into your eyes many times but you were probably doing the same to Thomas so you didn't say a thing.
Behind you, the dogs stumbled and slipped over themselves and the sand. They stopped a certain ways away from the Maze.
"Why'd they stop?" You yelled to no one in particular.
Gabi answered. "They aren't programmed to go passed a certain point. They'll malfunction if they do."
You sighed in relief. At least you wont have those things on your tails. But you still had many things to look forward to.
Your group stopped to do a head count. Everyone was present, thankfully, only a little battered and scraped. So you decided to get to the important stuff.
"Where are we going?" Teresa asked. "Any certain destination or are we just winging it?"
No one knew were to look. There was nothing for miles, except a sun damaged, broken city to your left and you knew going there would be sacrificing yourself to millions of infected people.
"There was a rumor back when we were working for WICKED," Gabi spoke up. "There was a secret service unit that the Right Arm had conjured up. No matter how hard anyone looked no one could ever trace anything back to it or find it. There's a chance it's still operating."
Yeah, Aris chimed in, scaring the crap out of you. There's record of it in data bases but nothing ever leads anywhere. They're still adding data to the files. The most recent update was yesterday.
You thought for a moment. Could this be another one of your mothers schemes to make you see a light in the world, only to crush it? It seemed likely.
Newt's hand found its way to your hip and tugged you closer to his side. Your thoughts scrambled into a tight ball and stopped. Thomas raised an eyebrow in your direction, sensing the feeling and you shot him a look.
Another thought crossed your mind, pulling you away from the chasm of giddy embarrassment you were plummeting into. Aris, where did you say you were?
Um... Hidden somewhere nearby. Say... I don't know, a few miles or so to your left?
Aris the closest thing to us is an abandoned city.
Then I'm somewhere in there.
"You've got to be shitting me." Minho wailed. "Can we get one break? Just one?"
"What? What happened?" Gally asked. His tone was interested but his face didn't match it.
"Aris is somewhere in that shuck city over there." Newt pointed over Alby's shoulder. "We have to go get him."
"Well, we don't have to-" You interrupted Gabi's stupid opinions with a hard chop to the stomach. "Yes, we do."
"Wow, you really are a heartless witch," Gally said almost in disbelief.
"And that's coming from him!" Thomas pointed out.
Gabi snarled in their direction but they weren't paying her any mind. She had lost their interest the first time she opened her mouth in their presence.
Thomas and Gally lead the group on, you and Newt hung a little towards the back. You slipped your arm around Newt's neck happily. His grip on your waist tightened slightly.
"Nothing like running into an abandoned city overrun with zombies, am I right?" The blond remarked snidely.
You chuckled. "Absolutely, except I wasn't with you last time."
"Wasn't this fun last time." Newt made a face, like he was contemplating saying something. "Does this count as a date?"
That little statement gave you such a jolt you started choking on air. "A what?"
"A date. Unless you don't want it to be," Newt raised an eyebrow. A playful, cruel light danced in his eyes. You knew right at that moment you would be seeing that look quite often.
"I-uh..." Your mind was a blank slate. You swallowed and tried to think of something.
"Newt, she's gonna overheat." Gally teased.
Your face burned. You hadn't blushed this hard in years. Not since you had to do that stupid presentation in front of all the candidates for the Maze about something so boring you completely forgot what it was on the next day. You buried your face in your hands.
"This reminds me of the time we had to do that presentation thing in front of everyone and (Y/N) was red from head to toe." Minho recalled causing you to blush more.
"Shut up!" No one listened to you of course. They continued laughing as they compared your face to the shade of various fruits.
Finally, Teresa spoke up. "Guys, guys. Really, stop. She's gonna implode."
Finally removing your hands from your face you whispered. "I hate all of you."
