"Dad, come check this out." Monica called from her computer as she started tracking down the cube. Tony leaned in along with Banner to look at the readings she was pulling up. "Whatever Loki's staff is made of, it's some pretty weird shit. We're talking elements that we've yet to discover on Earth, alien organic matter, even some traces of anti-matter in it. They wen't all out on this one, people quite literally died to make it." Monica explained.
The entire lab went silent and stared at the staff.
"Well damn." Tony muttered in slight awe.
Don't misunderstand, the awe was not with the desire to remake it or with the power hungry thirst for money. None of the three beings in the room wanted anything like that on Earth. Instead, the awe was in admiration for the sheer wealth of knowledge that went into it's creation.
As scientist and ultimately creatures of the academia life, they could envy the amount of time, research, and development that a civilization had to go through in order to make the once science fiction piece of technology into a reality.
The door to the lab opened with a soft hiss. Natasha stepped through. "Mon? Fury wants to talk with you in his office." Monica tore her gaze from the staff and nodded, following Natasha out.
They passed by Thor on the way, who caught Monica's arm. "Lady Jane is safe. I thought you would like to know seeing as you two left as great friends."
"She was more to you than she was to me and we both know that; however, hearing that she is safe is always welcomed news. I was greatly concerned for her." Monica admitted to Thor. "Thank you, Highness." She said and moved to bow.
Thor caught her torso on her way down. "No need to bow, I thought we were closer than that." Thor murmured in her ear.
Monica bit her lip and pulled back, looking around swiftly and catching Natasha's eye. "Tell Fury I'll be up in a bit." She ordered. The red head assassin nodded and left. Monica pulled Thor into a dark, abandoned room and glared at him. "What was that? You know that we can't, the people of Asgard need an Asgardian queen, we talked about-"
Thor pressed her against the wall and kissed her, his hands tangling in her hair as her hands fluttered and rested on each side of his jaw. Thor pulled back and rested his forehead against hers. "You have become an Asgardian to myself, my family, and nearly all the advisers. Isn't that enough?" He asked her softly.
Monica felt a stab of pain in her heart, as an avid learner of history, she knew from her studies of Earth history and her studies of Asgardian history that no matter who accepted her, if one Asgardian didn't then it would never be enough. Her talk with Odin a month and a half prior had proven her fears. "You know it is not, we can't keep doing this Thor. I can't keep doing this."
"Why not? You said that you've never loved another like you do me." He demanded, confused as to her reasoning. "It is so obviously putting you through pain my love, why won't you give us a chance?"
"Because I love you. Because I love Asgard and her people. Because I can never be enough and I will not force you to choose me or your kingdom. That isn't right Thor and I've done it enough when your father made me your adviser, not again." She reminded him sharply. Her tone then softened, letting the true extent of her hurt seep through. "I wasn't blind Highness, I saw what that did to you. I love you too much for you to have to choose." She whispered.
Leaning forward, she whispered into his ear her last thought. "You are a Prince and I am your first love. You'll find another, it happened to me with you. I love you. I'm sorry." She kissed his cheek before leaving the room and her Prince alone.
