Chapter Two

"You're kidding," Maree exclaimed, looking at me incredulously from across the table we sat at in the school's cafeteria, sushi still in her mouth. "And he just left? Like that?"

I shrugged, absently twirling some pasta around my plastic fork. The local college wasn't the best, resulting in equally horrible food, but I wasn't one to complain about the partially cooked pasta noodles. I had just told Maree, my best friend since infancy, about the events of the previous night.

"He sounds pretty hot to me," she mumbled around her Cola can.

"Um, are you ignoring the fact that I was held at gunpoint?"

"Are you dead?" She asked.

"Obviously not," I replied.

"Problem solved!"

I wasn't able to sleep properly the night before. I was occupied with thoughts of that masked man. The way he held me close to his solid chest. The way he whispered low in my ear. I get goosebumps now just thinking about it. His jet black hair was messily styled up which really helped define his high cheekbones. I don't think I really processed the robbery fully. I wasn't even traumatized by being held at gunpoint. I think I would have been... if that masked man hadn't intervened. But now, every time I thought back to last night, it was only him that I could think of. Which annoyed me, because he honestly seemed like an ass.

"Fuck, why are they making all this fucking commotion?" Maree grumbled, glaring at the table that was crowded, loud obnoxious laughter ringing across the hall as females tried to gain the attention of one particular person. "So what if there's a gorgeous transfer student? They don't need to worship him."

Ashton Waters, the new transfer student from who knows where. No one remembered and in all honesty, I don't think anyone really cared. All they really cared about was looking at him, and boy was he a piece of eye candy. Strong jaw, intense blue eyes and a smolder that could make anyone weak in the knees. His short brunette hair always seemed just perfect. Despite only being here for about two weeks, he was already one of the most popular on campus.

"Look at him," she snarled, biting the straw that was in the can. "Thinking he's so high and mighty and perfect. With that jawline and cheekbones. And those dark eyelashes.".

Suppressing a laugh, I turned to look at Ashton who was surrounded by people. On a table that would normally accommodate about six people, it had well over twice its limit. I actually kind of felt bad for the guy. Although he had a wide and kind smile on his face, he was obviously extremely uncomfortable. Especially when some girl tried to sit on his lap. Pathetic.

It was as if he felt me staring because suddenly, our eyes locked from across the cafeteria. All of the loud and obnoxious laughter seemed to mute itself as he stood up and slowly made his way towards our table.

"Shit," Maree gasped. "Is he walking this way? He's walking this way. Shit, shit, shit."

I ignored her, not physically able to look away as he finally reached our table. His followers from the other table stood by and looked at the both of us in shock. He stopped right in front of me, and I had to crane my head back to properly look into his eyes.

"Hi," he said simply, in a deep voice, holding his hand out to me. "I'm Ashton Waters. The new transfer student."

I know, was what I wanted to say, but instead, I shook his outstretched hand. "Nick Daley."
