Chapter Sixteen

"I don't know why I'm here," Evrain said, his electric blue eyes glancing around the training room nervously. "Aiden, why am I here again?"

Aiden prepared some mats as Maree, Cara and I watched in amusement as Evrain practically trembled. Cara knew something was up with me, so she followed me to the training room. She promised not to tell anyone if I agreed to let her watch. Apparently, this was something that she found entertaining.

Like Evrain, I was also trembling, but for an entirely different reason. I was trembling with excitement. I was finally doing something that was living up to all this expectation of me saving the world. I was supposed to be the one saving people, but until then, it felt like I was the one being saved. I felt like I was going to get somewhere. Sure, I had these weird powers and these weird marks on my hand, but at the end of the day, that meant nothing if I didn't know how to properly use them. And I didn't. So, despite this training only being for beginners, it was a lot for me.

"You're going to help me train Nick in combat, remember?" Aiden said, walking towards Evrain calmly.

"No, I don't remember... When did I-?" His sentence cut off by a short scream as he was thrown over Aiden's shoulder and landed on his back, a loud bang echoing off the mats. Cara snorted from beside me. She had a packet of crisps in her hand and was actually sharing it with Maree. I gulped and the excitement weared off a little.

"Rule number one," Aiden said as he helped up a shaken Evrain off of the mat. "The element of surprise. Try to catch your opponent off guard and try to be as unpredictable as you possibly can. The last thing you want is for your opponent to be able to calculate your moves. That was a very basic shoulder throw that I will teach you first."

To say that I was second-guessing my enthusiasm towards the training would be a complete understatement, but my need for justice and my need for Ashton's blood clouded any doubt I had in my actual abilities to learn these moves. And I knew that Aiden would make sure I didn't get hurt... Right?

"I will show you one more time with Evrain, step by step, then I will practice on you, okay?"

I nodded.

Aiden turned towards Evrain and motioned for him to move closer. "This time, Evrain, I want you to try and punch me."

Evrain tilted his head. "What?"

"You heard me. Punch me."

With an uncertain reel of his hand, Evrain went to throw a punch. Again, Aiden simply caught his fist, turned his body and threw all of his weight forward, bringing Evrain down to the mat with a slam. But something was a bit different that time as I was watching. It was seemingly as if everything was in slow motion, and every move that Aiden made- every placing of his body parts- was etched into my mind. As if I was watching something that I had already familiarized myself with.

"Okay, pumpkin," Aiden said with a slight smirk. "Your turn. Come on up, sweet cheeks."

I walked towards the mats, shaking hands clenched into fists at my side.

"I will do it once to you. I'll tell you where you need to put your hands and you stepping and anything, and I'm only going to explain once, then you will do it to me, do you understand?"
