I went over to Addison's to play our usual session of video games.
We sat on the floor, our backs leaning on the end of his bed.
It was an intense game. We were on the same team, trying to kill all the bad guys.
Addison sighed, 'You're extraordinarily and worryingly good at this game.'
I made my character take a swerve around a corner, but a grenade blew up in my face and I died.
'Nope. Not good.' I set the console on the floor.
He chuckled.
There was a silence, then I broke it.
'How old are you, Addie?'
'Uh... hang on,' he did a head shot on a dude, then paused the game. 'I am 20 this year.'
'20??' I looked at him, kind of shocked.
'Yeah' he said 'you?'
'I...,' I swallowed 'I'm 14.'
His face went still.
'You're.. Y-you're 14 years of age??' His eyes widened 'but you look like...'
'17, I know.' I nodded.
'You look so much more mature. You're in year 10?'
I nodded.
He sat back.
'Does this mean our relationship is different, now?' I worried.
'No. Of course not. I can't believe I didn't know before.'
'Yeah. Never really came up in conversation, I guess.'
He put his arm around my shoulder.
'Well, let's play' he abandoned my back and grabbed the console.
Well, he knows.
