Kate's POV

Fourteen years ago my best friend Scarlett was taken from her home. The police marked the case as cold when they found no evidence that she had indeed been taken.

They said that she had probably ran away. But I don't believe that because I was there. But nobody knows that not even the police.

Even if the police had known they wouldn't have believed a word I said. It's hard to erase such vivid memories.

"Relax Kate. Nobody has to know that you are here. You just said that your parents were on a business trip so they won't notice that you don't go home. My parents won't even ask questions if you stay in my room quietly." Scarlett said trying to convince me to stay at her house.

"But what if I'm not quiet enough?" I asked scared of getting caught and scared of staying home alone.

"Kate you do realize that you are the quietest person that I have ever met right? So are you coming or not?" Scarlett asked as her bus stop approached.

I nodded head as I looked around the now empty bus. The bus lurched to a stop and Scarlett walked down the aisle and I followed her.

As we approached the house I noticed that her front door was open. "Scar are your parents home?" I ask pointing at the door with a slightly shaking hand.

"No. And I closed that door this morning. I'm the only person that has a key to that door." Scarlett said walking up the porch steps. I followed and we paused by the ajar door. "Kate. Stay right here." Scarlett said and I nodded in consent.

Scarlett pushed the door open and stepped inside. "Mom! Dad!" Scarlett shouted turning down the hall that led to her parents room. Then there was silence.

I can't do silence. I stepped inside just as Scarlett let out an ear piercing scream. I ran down the hall and pushed the door open.

I saw Scarlett trying to fight off three men three times her size. I met her terrified eyes then grabbed the first thing I could -an aluminum bat that belonged to her father.

I ran up behind the men and hit one of the upside the head and he laughed. "Run Kate! Run!" Scarlett screamed trying to get lose but not succeeding.

So I ran.

I snapped myself out of my memories before I could remember everything else that happened that dreadful night.

My office door opened and there stood one of the newest recruits. He was tall, muscular and had brown eyes.

"Detective. The Captain assigned me to you." He said giving me a once over as I stood.

"Okay then. First you are to call me Kate. Not Detective. Second I need your file." I said looking the man who seemed to be about my age.

"Okay." He said somewhat confused as he handed me his file. I took it from him and motioned for him to sit across from me.

"So tell me a little bit about yourself while I put my notes back together." I said gathering up all of Scarlett's case.

"My name is Isaac. I grew up here and couldn't afford college. Sonic got me a full time job and worked till I had enough. I graduated the top of my class. Why are you reviewing a cold case?" Isaac asked staring at the folder marked cold in my hands.

"Maybe I'll tell you some other time." I said as my phone rang. I picked it up and said, "Hello. This is Kate speaking."

"Kate it's Journey. I ran those sketches that you sent me through the database. Kate why did you want to know who these men are?" Journey asked sounding worried.
